Congratulations to Canton's Problem Solving Teams!

Canton MA has been the proud hometown of several championship problem solving teams over the past several years.  This year is no exception.  Canton took home several first, second and third place prizes in yesterday's Massachusetts State Problem Solving Competition.

What are problem solvers you ask?  According to to the Future Problem Solving Program International, Inc. the problem solving program "stimulates critical and creative thinking skills, encourages students to develop a vision for the future, and prepares students for leadership roles."  Students in grades 4-12 form teams, and with guidance from their coaches, use a six-step model to solve complex societal problems.

The teams practice during the school year, working on sample problems and learning the six-step model.  The culmination of the program comes in the state competition, where the teams compete against other teams from across the state to solve a hypothetical problem.  They are given the problem & then given two hours to solve the problem and write out how they came up with the solution.

In addition to the Future Problem Solving program (FPS), there is also a Community Problem Solving Program (CmPS).  In the CmPS program, the teams choose a problem from their community that they would like to solve, usig the same six step model.  They work throughout the school year to come up with and implement the solutions to their chosen problem.  Their work is documented and submitted to the state committee, who judges the submission from across the state. Canton's CmPS teams have tackled problems such as food allergy awareness, automation/computerization of Canton's Food Pantry, World Hunger, Bullying and Empowering Senior Citizens....just to name a few that I can remember off the top of my head.

The winners of the State competition are then invited to attend the International Competition, this year being held at the University of Wisconsin in LaCrosse Wisconsin.  There they compete agains teams from across the country & across the world.  There is both a Future Problem Solving and a Community Problem Solving component to this competition.  There are three age categories Junior (Grades 4-6), Middle (Grades 7-9) and Senior (Grades 10-12).

Every year Canton's teams, perform well in the State and International Competition.  In the 2010 International Competition, they took home second place in the Senior Division for FPS at the International Competition, 1st place and 2nd place for CmPS in the Middle Division and placed 4th for CmPS in the Junior Division.

This year's state competition was on Saturday & Canton once again did very well:  In the skit presentation Junior Division they took home 3rd place, Middle Division they also won 3rd place.  In the FPS Team competition Junior Division they placed 2nd and 3rd, FPS Team Competition Middle Division won 3rd and the CmPS Junior teams placed 1st and 2nd with the CmPS Middle Division Team placing 2nd.  The CmPS Senior Team came in 1st.

Canton is very proud of its problem solving teams and their acheivements.  Those who took home first place awards in the State competition will be heading to the International Competition in June!

Not only are the achievements impressive all by themselves, but the coaches are all volunteers, making it more impressive.  The school district is able to fund the registration for all the teams but other costs are borne by the team members.  All materials are paid for by the teams.  And, those who travel to the International Competition must either raise the funds or pay out of pocket to attend.

However, as the proud parent of a child who was on a State Champion CmPS team last year and who went on to place 4th at Internationals, it was well worth the effort.  It was a great opportunity and unmatched learning experience.

Congratulations to this year's State winners and good luck to those going on to the International Competition!  You make Canton proud!

This competition being open to so many grade levels is awesome.  The learning opportunity for our young people and their involvement will affect them for many, many years.
