SoBo: Inside the South Boulder neighborhood

By

Southwestern Boulder was once commonly referred to as “Table Mesa,” but over the years the term has lost traction. Nowadays, neighbors of this part of town call it SoBo—a more accurate descriptor for this community of mod-minded, educated folks with family priorities.

The centerpiece of SoBo is Harlow Platts community park.

With its immaculate vistas, easy access to and from Boulder, bike paths and bus lines leading all over town, dog-friendly hiking trails, and quiet neighborhoods accommodating all lifestyles and incomes, it's no wonder that home buyers have traditionally made SoBo the city's premier landing spot.

The Neighborhood Borders

Couched into the southwest area of the city, SoBo is essentially everything you see west of Broadway beginning at Dartmouth Ave., and stretching down to Greenbriar Blvd., which winds around the low rolling grasslands and open space on the lower edge of town.

Accentuated by several distinct neighborhoods, getting oriented with SoBo is easy. Peering west from Broadway, the flat area south of Table Mesa Drive is called Table Mesa South. On the southern central edge of SoBo, the area just north of where Greenbriar Blvd. turns into Lehigh St. is known as Shanahan Ridge, a mixed lifestyle neighborhood of both affordable condos and single-family dwellings. The neighborhood west of Lehigh St. is known as Devil's Thumb, featuring the community's more exclusive homes.   Directly southwest of the park, the Rolling Hills neighborhood offers gorgeous views of both Boulder's foothills, the park, and Viele Lake. Meanwhile, everything northwest of Broadway and Table Mesa Dr. is considered Table Mesa North, a purely residential, roomier neighborhood highlighted by homes built on low-slung hillsides and winding streets.
