Harvest Moon: Some History

By
Services for Real Estate Pros

moonOne of the many reasons that Autumn/Fall is my favorite season of the year is because the Harvest Moon (or full moon) seems to be so much more awesome in September and October.  According to Wikipedia the Harvest Moon can come before or after the autumnal equinox

Of course every moon is really the same but every season of the year has it's own name for the moon. Long before the modern calendar people named the full moons of a year to keep track of time.

From the "Farmer's Almanac" (these are the names given to each month's moon):

  • January:  Wolf Moon
  • February: Snow Moon
  • March:     Worm Moon
  • April:       Pink Moon
  • May:        Flower Moon
  • June:       Strawberry Moon
  • July:        Buck Moon
  • August:    Sturgeon Moon
  • September: Harvest Moon
  • October:     Hunter's Moon
  • November:  Beaver Moon
  • December:  Cold Moon

Then there's the blue moon which is during a month that has two full moons....which happens once in a blue moon!

Mary, you learn something new everyday, and this is definitely something that I did not know about!  It's actually pretty interesting!  I was just reading through all the meanings in the "Farmers Almanac", and they all seem to be pretty relevant.  Some interesting stuff!  Thanks for taking my mind off the industry!

And here I thought it was just a sailboat regatta.  The harvest moon sailboat regatta takes place at this time of the year and goes from Galveston to I think Port Arransis but I could be wrong on where it ends.  My husband did it once.

Mary:

Thanks.  I never knew the moon had different names throughout the year.

Mary, I had always heard about the Harvest Moon from my parents since I was young.  Way back when it helped he farmers bring in their crops.  Your post brings back memories.
