Many people live in Carlsbad (or elsewhere in the San Diego area) because of the weather. Certainly we have a terrific reputation as a city with wonderful weather most of the year, which is a major reason why so many folks move here. It's hard to argue with weather that is 60 to 80 degrees year-round with lots of sun.

Southern California is known for its outdoor lifestyle, and there are certainly lots of ways to enjoy it - surfing, sailing, the beaches, hiking, and so much more. And, as a buyer you have an opportunity to purchase a Carlsbad home that will allow you to enjoy the true California lifestyle at home.

Outdoor kitchens have become incredibly popular and can range from a simply barbecue or can be as elaborate as you wish, up to a full replica of an indoor kitchen with a large flat screen TV (see Marlene's terrific post on a must have in Orange County - Outdoor Rooms). Many homes in Carlsbad, particular more expensive properties, offer variations of outdoor kitchens, and the options to expand are, for the most part, are only limited by your imagination and budget.

These outdoor kitchens also becoming far more popular in the new construction homes that are offered in master planned communities such as La Costa Ridge and La Costa Greens. Builders recognize that many buyers want these features as part of their new homes, and so they include them in their model homes, with options to include them in your new home.

Some folks prefer a simple cooking arrangement outside (in many cases just a gas grill), but want more of a separate outdoor room to enjoy dining, entertaining, or just relaxing.

These areas often include an outdoor fireplace and large seating area, which you can customize as you desire. Model homes for a number of the local builders also showcase these outdoors rooms for you to dream.

The following virtual tour illustrates some of the options you have as a buyer of a new Carlsbad home, but also may suggest some things to consider when buying your Carlsbad home.

Marlene - well, none of these although I have some ideas about what I want to do. However, the duck in the prior post on water features are floating in my spool.

Hi Jeff!

The outdoor living area is the most enjoyable part of southern California living!!! I'm missing that warm, breezy weather... eating breakfast outdoors, leaving the windows cracked year-round, napping on the loungechair..

Jeff - When I was selling in the Southwest, outdoor living was always a hot selling point. Cooking and entertaining features, firepits for cool evenings.........life at it's finest! Now, I am missing it, especially this time of year when it is starting to cool down.

Paula- well, nothing has changed, but the way in which people can enjoy the outdoors seems to be getting more sophisticated (and expensive). The air is changing here, too, as fall has now arrived, but certainly not the change YOU are experiencing. I'll take this, thank you.

I absolutely LOVE outdoor living! We have a partially walled front patio with stone gas FP that we are ALWAYS hanging out in. Sometimes OUTDOOR livable sqftg can be just as valuable as indoor sqftg.

Jeff, beautiful job on the video.  That’s another concept I had not seen before, but that might be that is would not very conducive to the months of December through April here in New England ...... LOL

Mariana - that is true. The whole concept of a blurring of inside and out is becomming much more obvious in the new housing being built. I have even seen listings where they are counting the outdoor room SF (but at least appear to be disclosing that it is included).
