Our beautiful daughter got married Sunday, the first day of Spring. For her, it was a new beginning, the start of a new life with a wonderful young man who has captured her heart. For me, her wedding was a reminder of what is really important in life.
Although she wanted the wedding to be nice, none of the wedding details were really important to her. All she wanted to do was marry the man she loves. She didn't care if we had programs, wedding favors, bubbles to send them off, or any of the other things brides usually stress over. She didn't care if the bridesmaids had matching shoes, or how they wore their hair. She just wanted to be married.
I was the one stressing over wedding details. The flowers had to be the perfect shade of blue, the programs had to be printed in just the right font, the wedding favor boxes had to be decorated with the right shade of yellow ribbons, and of course the mother-of-the-bride dress had to be perfect. Details, details, details...all being taken care of by me, while at the same time, running a real estate business that was picking up furiously.
All of the little details I spent so much time on didn't amount to a hill of beans. The wedding was beautiful, not because of what I organized, but because God blessed her with a gorgeous spring day with perfect weather for her wedding. The flowers were in bloom, the trees had leaves, the sky was clear and blue, the grass was already green, and the temperature was just right. Spring got here just in time for a perfect wedding day in a lovely garden. And all of that happened because of the grace of God, not because any of my wedding details worked out. The blue tulle bows on the chairs were pale in comparison to God's beautiful blue hydrangeas. The yellow ribbons on the favor boxes couldn't hold a candle to the magnificent marigolds God created. The recorded music was nothing compared to the singing of the birds God invited to the wedding garden. HE did all of the work that really made our daughter's wedding day so lovely.
For my Spring Renewal, I will be making more time in my schedule for things that really matter - love, family, friends, service. I have been asked to lead a home Bible study for senior women, some of whom are showing signs of dementia. At first, I was tempted to decline because real estate is so busy in the spring. But I have said yes...making more time in my schedule to help the Lord with things that matter.
Real estate will be picking up this spring, but I will be slowing down just enough to appreciate all of the blessings the Lord has given.
