Stop putting up walls on your business

There has been a lot of discussion to this topic, some which came up in my blog, Why do you blog? Your answer maybe the reason you aren't getting any business from it! One of the things that came up is people don't want to blog about themselves.


Well, I was told at age 18, when I started a new business that involved working with the public that people work with people they either know or like. I had to change my appearance based on that statement. I owned a DJ business and in order to get people to hire me as a DJ for their event, I had to set myself apart and get people who didn't know me to like me over a competitor just through my literature that I sent them when they got engaged to be married.

I've taken that same approach with two other businesses since then and have now taken it to real estate. So if your business is just like everyone else's business, people don't know who you are, and they are looking at three other agents, that leaves only one thing left. They have to like you and one of the ways to get people to like you is writing about yourself and your likes and dislikes.

You don't have to get too personal, but sometimes people just want to know what you are like before they do business with you. So, in my opinion, I think it is a great idea to write about yourself a little bit just so you can grab a few more of those clients that are sitting on the fence about hiring you over another agent.

You mentioned that you had to change your appearance.  Did you mean your physical appearance or your marketing appearance?  What did you change?  Can you give one or two examples?

I believe i've read that blog you linked Todd. It is funny that you mention that. It is so true, you need to separate yourself and give people a reason to use you for your services. What makes you better than the person standing next to you?

Buyers, Sellers, and our fellow Active Rainers appreciate us showcasing our personalities. They want to know what we're like as people not just that we're people trying to earn money from their business. I read all of your blogs because I like your sense of humor, your tongue-in-cheek style, I think you show that you are very dedicated and knowledgeable about what you're doing. If you posted blogs with no personality, I would've said, "NEXT" and moved on.
