So, in my quest for becoming some sort of tech geek (given the fact that I'm anything but that), I have made it a quest to learn weekly.  About two years ago I started using Go to Meeting (check it out at www.gotomeeting.com) to host meetings.  What this has done is allowed me less travel time and very comprehensive meetings from my computer.  Enough about that.

This year, I've started doing more presentations to larger groups.  You know what that means?  It means that I'm now living on power point by Microsoft.  The problem with my lack of the right kind of geekiness is that my presentations are dynamic from what I'm presenting verbally, but so boring visually that I need to keep an eraser by me to throw at the person who is nodding off during one of my spectacular dynamic presentations.

2011 I made a vow to cure that.  Sooooooooooooooo, I decided that I wanted to start capturing pictures for my presentations.

I'VE ALSO BEEN ABLE TO DO IT BLOGGING!

Most folks who have later versions of Microsoft have "snippet" on their coYou can draw on screen shots with Snagitmputer.  It's nice and it'll copy what you click and drag over with your mouse, but it doesn't do much else but that.  In fact, it irritates me because you can't print just from the shot you took.

SO IN MY QUEST TO GEEK UP......

I found Snagit.  Snagit is pretty sick.  There's about 7 competitors out there.  I've used  Fullshot as well.  It's good, but just a tad more difficult to master than Snagit.  With Snagit, the same principle exists.  Click and drag over what you want copied and it will capture that for you to work with later.  What I like about it is that you can capture and edit in certain shapes and sizes for presentation. You can change edgings with

While it's not all things to all people, I think that it's the slickest thing out there.  You can go to their website and get a free 30 day trial.  I thought for sure I'd be done with it after 30 days.  I like it so much that I'm signing up for a one year subscription.  Check it out!  Thanks my .02 geek tech tip for the month!

Interesting tool Larry. I know internal to the Apple itself there are free keyboard sequences that do this already. Does this work with Apple and how is it different than normal cut and paste tools?

Larry~ Thanks for the tip. I've seen others use this but couldn't figure it out.  I think I'm even less techy than you.  :)

Larry,

I have Snipping Tool in Windows 7, and use it just because it is F-R-E-E.  But I had SnagIt before I got W7, and it is a much more versatile tool.  Probably worth paying for if one wants advanced functionality.

Always looking for tools for presentations. I'll check out snagit today, but I like free better. Anything out there in the free range? :)

Gary....good to know.  I don't know about Apple...sorry!

Kim....easy as pie!

Mike....I use snippit all the time, but b/c of ease and editing, I like Snagit better!

Marti...thanks bud...you da man!

Jim....I like free too!  Try snippit through Windows.  Not much functionality, but still captures screens and it's free!

Snagit is my favorite, and I've been using it for years.  It does have a ton of features and things you can do with it.

For those looking for a free option, the same company who brought us Snagit also offers Jing which is totally worth checking out.  It does screen capture with fewer features.

Larry...have never used snagit but did begin using gotomeeting.com several years ago with CRS. It saved so much time and money in travel that it was well worth it!

Larry,  I agree with you, Snagit is a winner.  I use it all the time, and it is well worth the money.  The upgraded version though, that came out if I am not mistaken about 4 to 5 months ago, is not worth it.  I paid for it and got it, and I am still using it as a "beta" on my home computer, while keeping the old one at work.  It crashes my computer sometimes, and most importantly, you cannot resize the capture on an email when you copy and paste, because it has a sort of "3rd dimension" that allows to add blank (transparent) canvas around your capture.  To do that they had to change the format of the capture (technically, and by memory, the image is 32 bits instead of 24 bits).  I can get back to you on that if need be.  The improvement has that bad consequence that you can't resize once you have copied the capture.  So I am not going to upgrade my version at work.

Thanks for the input though about this great tool.  I don't know how I did before ...

Tara....I wasn't aware of that.....thanks!

Kim....that's why I love you!

Francis.....that blows me away.  So the version that you buy, is that the beta version, or when you buy, you have the most recent version, but not the beta version?  I don't want that beta version.

I simply use the print screen function that is on every keyboard ever made. Then I past my screen show it Corel Photopaint (you can use any graphics program you want) and do whatever I want to it.

Hi Larry,

no the new version (version 10) is not a beta.  It is the new version that you would buy today.  There are some nice new things of course, but overall I still prefer the old version for what I use the software for.  But it is kind of fun to play with the new version.

for instance you can do this:

The original cut was only the text.  I added all the blank around.  BUT then I cannot touch the result once I have copied it to this email.  I believe it would then appear all black.  Let me try it below, where I am going to resize the paste:

they explained to me that it is because the image is in 32 bit format (necessary to have the transparency capability).  Whereas in the previous version, you cannot add transparancy, and the image is simply in 24-bit format.

Francis

PS: I realize after publishing this that it does not show the image.  Not sure why.  May be because it is in 32-bit format??

Wow, could have used this for the blog I just posted on managing business cards. It took me 5 minutes to write the blog and 45 min. to figure out how to capture and copy a screenshot into the blog. I'll have to go check it out and see if it's compatable with my Mac. Thanks!

I've been using these types of tools for a while and they can be a great resource. My only warning is to remember that copyright issues still apply, so be careful if you are capturing other peoples creative work!

I love SnagIt - been using it for so long I forogt which version I started with!  Its great when you are taking online training, rather than have to take so many notes I just capture the screen image of the important things that I want to remember and then save the captured all to it's own file folder about the subject.
