15 Comments on A Grab Bar can Hold Towels but a Towel Bar Cannot Hold Grabs!
I think I broke on of those when I was a kid hanging on to it. Either that of my mom screaming at me not to swing from it. That brings back old memories.
Margaret, you make such a great point about Safety, and even about Liability.
In my home, the towel bars are firmly secured through the tiles into the wall studs or framework (yes, I paid a carpenter a pretty penny to do this).
Whether a person is simply yanking a towel from the rod, or perhaps they slip and grab the bar for support, the poorly secured rod in your example is going to come off the wall.
Very good point Margaret in building a bathroom where someone might need a REAL grab bar.
Margaret, you never cease to amaze me. Who would think to write about such a thing as 'grab bars', but how very helpful this info is. I have to admit that I have entered into the phase of my life that I have to be careful of 'falls'.

After numerous towel bars being ripped from the wall, we finally had grab bars installed in my parents house...........in spite of all of the protesting they did..............after all, they didn't need them. One too many times of the paramedics lifting one of them off the floor............the guys we later referred to as Mickey's "boyfriends"..............only after T was gone of course. T is what Mickey called my Dad.
Roger, People usually do protest grab bars, but never really nice towel holders. They should be mandatory in bathrooms. Sounds like this could be a business for some entrepreneur.
Chris, Falls do not discriminate about age. We all need to think safety in our home.
Gary,Real grab bars seem to make sense in all homes. Double duty bars could help cut down on numerous injuries.

Cheryl, You have made a good point. Many towel bars "look" sturdy enough for swinging...but we know differently.
So... chin-ups are a no-no on a towel bar?

Margaret, great title for what may be considered by some a necessary evil. I find myself reaching now and then for something a lot sturdier than the "towel bar" also.
Kevin, Be careful what you reach for! Make sure it is sturdier than a towel bar.
Margaret - This is one of the things to consider when buying a home you plan to "age" in. There are a number of design features that offer both safety and mobility features ... like the heighth of the light switches and wall plugs. The first a little lower, the second a little higher ... and without any real consideration ... a wheelchair accessible feature. Thanks for sharing ...
Jack, This makes so much sense to build these accessible features in all homes. Safe and mobile features don't add much to the cost when done in the beginning. They can make it a forever home. Thanks for your insight.
Excellent points! We think these are only important for specific people but we never know when we'll need this assistance and it would be nice to have it already installed. Our towel bar in the guest bathroom barely holds the towels so it definitely wouldn't help me out :-)
