There IS A Difference Between Marketing and SPAM...You Are Making A Huge Mistake!
As blogging begins to really gain more momentum, there is an important element that bloggers would be wise to understand. There IS A Difference Between Marketing and SPAM...You Are Making A Huge Mistake if you are utilizing SPAM techniques and calling them marketing. Perhaps there are a few who are engaging in such a practice and do not even realize it. Writing a marketing piece is about relating to the customers needs. To effectively market, you must first identify your customer, next the labor of understanding their needs and satisfying those needs comes into play.
Here’s where the huge mistake shows up. The target audience is identified, a marketing piece is developed and then BAM! Let the SPAM begin. That one marketing piece is placed on the web over and over again. No problem there, right? The problem is when it is placed multiple times with the switch of a few key words. While this idea may appear “brilliant” at first glance to the over-zealous blogger/marketer, what one must bear in mind is that people are not inherently stupid. If you come across the ad once or twice or a million times over and it is the same ad, the average person is not offended.
The average person becomes offended when the same ad pops up over and over with a few mere tweaks of the key words. The average person then says, “Hey they think we’re stupid!”
According to wikipedia, Spam is the use of electronic messaging systems (including most broadcast media, digital delivery systems) to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately.
When utilized in this manner, your marketing just became SPAM. And just like it’s canned meat counterpart...it’s tasteless (just my humble opinion). I didn’t like SPAM as a kid and I don’t like it now. Be genuine, figure out who your target market is and appeal to their senses and sensibilities. The buying public is wiser than you seem to think. Once you really understand who your target market is, you will be better able to provide them with what is important to them. Now that’s a win-win for everyone!
