Lyme Disease in Connecticut

We have just been told that our black lab puppy, Jack, tested positive for Lyme disease.  We are taking all the precautions with him, but somehow, an infected tick bit our one year old lab.  I had brought him to the vet for a routine check. Three days later, I got the message.  He tested positive. Immediately, he was prescribed an antibiotic.  We can only hope it does its job. He will be on the medicine for six months, and then be retested to see if his count goes down, meaning the meds worked. He has shown no visable signs of the illness. He is still perky, happy and learning new tricks.  The vet believes we have caught it in time. Please have your pet checked regularly.  This is a nasty little deer tick that can cause death if not detected. We will continue the Frontline treatment, the vet said it was 96% effective.  The vaccine they do not recommend, they believe it is about 50% effective. Would you believe, Jack is an inside dog, yes, we go for walks, walk in the yard, we have kept him out ot the woods, and he has never  been left outdoors. We have an invisible fence (from our first lab, Bandit) but, we have not put Jack on it yet. Bandit lived to be 12 years, 8 1/2 months old, never had Lyme disease.  Hopefully, once six months has passed, Jack will not have it again.  Please have your pets checked and often.

That is really horrible Frances, it must be hard being able to do so little to help. I wonder how in the world Jack had the misfortune to find that one nasty little tick. That seems really strange especially being an indoor dog. I have been lucky in that department so far, seeing neither ticks nor flees about my Harry; but when all it takes is one to infect a dog it makes me kind of nervous. I wish you every luck and Jack a quick recovery. Thanks for the warning!

We think we narrowed it down, but, who really knows.  There was a little field mouse in his dog dish a week ago, last Friday.  My guess is, the mouse had the infected tick.  Jack is still his same puppyness, happy and eager to learn more tricks, no signs of the disease at all.  My guess is, we tested within 3 days of the tick bite.

I've had some run-ins with ticks on indoor pets.  I'm happy to say that we never ran into a Lyme Disease problem.
It's a good thing that you just happen to have had a routine appointment scheduled for him.  I sure hope your puppy, Jack, re-tests negative.

Nancy, thanks for your comment!  Yes, we are so happy to have caught it before it had any effect on our puppy. The more people you talk to, the more you hear that their dog has had it. I am amazed, our vet told us 90% of dogs in CT will or have had it.  The deer are so beautiful, but, they seem to carry this dangerous tick on them.
