Being a Realtor When You Are Not Well

By
Real Estate Agent with Beautiful Day Real Estate 9040964

It is very hard to be a Realtor when you are not well.  So many people depend on us being there.  Answering the calls with their questions, making the appointments, showing the sellers property so it can sell as quickly as possible or showing the buyer property quickly enough so they don't lose it to another buyer.  Like it says in the contact, "time is of the essence".

So what do we do when we are not well?  Most times we push ourselves through the day trying to meet all of our customers and clients expectations, trying to rest in between.  It usually takes longer for us to get better because we never give ourselves enough time to recooperate properly.  We don't get paid if we don't close so we have to keep working.  Only in extreme situations will we call an associate to cover for us because we know that they are busy with their business and making money to support themselves.

But sometimes we just have to stop. Call and reschedule the appointments for just a few days, most people will understand.

To our health!

Karen:  I don't think I have ever seen a blog post covering this topic.  And it's been long overdue, to be sure.  I have been through many times when I have felt just horrible, and still felt that because so many of my sellers and buyers depended on me... that I had to somehow still "perform."

I guess that's one of the benefits of those who now have "teams..." so that their work can be carried out even when they are under the weather.

I myself have been "down" for a few years... slowed down by a variety of things... and it has really been tough... not doing all those things for people that I have faithfully done for many years.  Great post.  <suggested>

You have to get well just to give your best!  Deal with what you must but prioritize and get your rest...

It's part of being a business owner...push through what you can, when you can't you have to delegate and prioritize to get back on track!

Karen,  You are so right,  Sometimes we must remember to take care of ourselves first.  Most clients will understand if we put something off for a day or 2 because we are sick.

Hi, Karen. You have to give your body the time it needs to heal, just as you need to give paint time to dry or cement to set. If not, the results are predictable.

People have come to expect service 24/7 and they get impatient with down time, often moving on.

So true Karen. It would be best for us to take a day to get better instead of losing an entire week.

Relax and follow me...I know the way home.

I'm so glad to see that there are many realtors out there who know what it's like to keep on pushing even when we aren't well.  Fellow Realtors we are strong!!!

Karen -

Sometimes I think we are the ones who set ourselves up with our clients as being "always available".  It's so easy to do.  There is a fine line to walk when attempting to set boundaries with our clients WITHOUT losing them.  We have to have personal time, family time, whatever time AWAY from work.

We tell our clients we "always" have our phones with us.  BUT we have also learned to interject little things like "I don't answer my phone during dinner" or "I don't answer email when spending quality time with my children".

I also think it's ok to simply tell a client - "hey, I'm a little under the weather today so I'm working from home" or even that you're taking a healing day. That way they don't simply think you're ignoring them.

Honestly and humanity will win out every time!
