Transition Stage: When Life Brings Change Home

Home. A simple four-letter word that, for many of us, conjures up an image of sanctuary, safety, animal comfort. A place where we drop our business worries and relax deeply, rest peacefully, and wake renewed to start another day.

But life - and our needs in a home - change all the time. Students move into first apartments or homes, outgrow them, move up to something bigger, get married, need more bedrooms and a backyard. And then there are the empty nest years, when new adventures await and that big house seems to take more work than it's worth. And as we get older, we may find ourselves isolated in a big house, and want to move to where there will be more interaction, more socializing, and the possibility of more care.

When life brings change home, it's fundamental to who we are, how we live, and it can rock our world. Some people get energized at the thought of this kind of change, but many more get sad, and sometimes unable to decide - or complete - their next steps.

Judy-'right-sizing' wins my vote for best new and improved term of recent memory. We are so beholden to our stuff and our routines, and it is indeed stressful to be on the cups of needing to make such a change.

Moves are traumatic for many. In fact I think it is among the Top 10 stressors in life. Certainly, having someone assist in that move that has the skills to alleviate some of the concerns would be a very valuable thing.

Hi JoAnn - Thank you; I think all of these services work well together and offer more comprehensive help for my clients. Rightsizing seems to be a term that's gaining more traction - it's so much less negative sounding than downsizing.
