How do you measure your success?
buyersThe other  morning I was reading Tammy Lankford's post in Active Rain...my client thanks you SO much: a great success story with Zillow worth the read.  She ended her post with a good question "How do you measure your success?" Her point being this was a lower price home compared to many of her lakefront properties she sells but it did not matter because the joy she felt from helping this client make her first home purchase was so rewarding.

I was asked recently "why did I get into Real Estate?"  The real reason is I loved the thought I could apply my skills and help people navigate the process of listing and purchasing homes.  I found the right Broker who emphasized if you always do the "right thing" the money will follow.

I found, like Tammy, the satisfaction I receive is not dependent on the price of the home thus the size of the commission check  The measure of success is if I made a difference in the home buying experience to my client.  What a natural high!! Life is good...

Dorie, it is so true & time & time again some older agents tell me that i'm not doing the "ABC's" of the business...i work it my way and I believe for the right reasons for me and my clients.  Do agree that it is the best way to be in life and work...good post.

I know you are looking comments on what makes you a success in real estate.  But I have to share that I have always said success in life if making enough money to pay the bills and a little left over and getting up and doing what you love to do everyday.  I am saying its more important to love what you do and sacrifice the money than to go for  the money and not like what you do!

Dorie - I love your post and agree, when you do what you love, the money will follow and happiness isn't measured in money - at least not to everyone!

I feel the same way about staging - I've done small jobs for people who have fallen on hard time and had to sell their home - I reduced my price and worked my butt of to get their home sold so they could move on - far more rewarding than some of my bigger jobs that netted more money!

I agree with your measurement.  Some times the tough transactions are the most rewarding in my opinion, it is about getting the job done and having a happy client.

What your broker said reminds me of something Oprah said on "Master Class" yesterday.  She said, "Be the best at what you do and opportunities will follow".  I maybe misquoting her but to be successful we have to ask ourselves questions like yours and Tammy's.  It keeps us on our toes and provides practical motivation for doing the right thing.
