Promenade or Prome-not?

There is a lot of local controversy in Catonsville, a south west suburb of Baltimore County about potential development of a huge multi use complex known as
The Catonsville Promenade. Currently the 200 acre property that fronts up to the Baltimore ring road I-695 is known as Spring Grove Hospital Center.

Spring Grove Campus

Although I am told there are still residents on the campus, a majority of the classic buildings are empty and appear abandoned. For the 8 years I have lived in Catonsville the ONLY activity I have been aware of is when a patient has escaped and there is a recorded phone message to make me aware. I recently took a morning stroll to take some pictures. There was not a soul in sight.

Here are some of the buildings.

As a resident of 21228, I believe the new development will be a wonderful addition to the area and provide many community benefits. Promenade in catonsvilleMany of my Catonsville neighbors do not feel the same way and have placed signs in their yards that express their dislike.

As of yet there is very little information about the entire project and assumptions of negativity towards the potential increase in traffic and crime, I believe, are premature. It seems there is still a lot of red tape that has delayed the initial construction, but hopefully they will proceed soon.

An article about the Promenade received a response from the developer, Steve Whalen who also resides in Catonsville. An Baltimore Sun article written in 2006 quotes Whalen predicting the start of construction being 2 years away, obviously that did not happen.

Meanwhile, we just wait to see what will happen.

love your photos.  I love the old buildings.  I am not sure I am brave enough for an early morning photo tour of an area where  i'd received a call... "when a patient has escape."

but your photos are great.

I can think of similar situations here.  OSU land, golf courses, our own office building.  It is funny to me when people get so attached to green space on ground they do not own.  I guess people get attached to an illusion of space and want land that is underutilized to remain fallow... of course the prospect of more traffic...makes people testy.
