The Long Arm of the Internet

By
Real Estate Agent with Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc.

bryson city ncMost of us on ActiveRain have discovered the power of the Internet - in fact, that is one of the things that attracted us to this network.

We've seen it evidenced in referrals to and from other ActiveRainers, and perhaps even direct contact from relocating consumers.  We have even gone out of our way to meet new ActiveRain friends when we travel to other parts of the country.

One individual recently discovered the long arm of the Internet, too, when library workers in Marianna Black Library in Bryson City, North Carolina, read an email about a missing child and his non-custodial parent.  They thought the photos resembled a father and son who frequented the library in this small town of fewer than 2000 people near the Great Smoky Mountains, so they checked "America's Most Wanted" website.  Then they called the police.

As a result, a child was reunited with his mother, while his father faces charges of noncustodial abduction.  (By the way, 30 days in jail and a $500 fine are the penalty for this felony.)

Just more evidence of the long arm of the Internet and further proof that we never know who our cyber-communication will reach, even in remote rural hideways.

Margaret-That is a very mild punishment for actions like that.  I'm so glad the child's Mom has her little one back.

Just a side note.  That sign for Bryson City is great though.  I suppose the judicial system really stands by that.

-Uncrowded.  Jail time only 30 days for a child abduction.

-Unhurried. $500 fine for such weak actions?  There is no Hurry to make people like that suffer much, for a poor action.

-Unspoiled. A complete contradiction.  Actually quite spoiled to not have more time and money due for the actions.

-Uncommon.  How uncommon is that?  Probably not too uncommon.

I still like the sign.  More so it brings out the positive thoughts when it's first read.

Hey, Julie - Don't judge N.C.  Those are Maryland penalties.  I do love their sign.  Makes me want to visit there.  Maybe move there.  lol

Bill - The Internet has changed more than real estate!  Now the long arm of the law is the long arm of the Internet.

Ricki, you're welcome.  Email me anytime with questions.

Margaret, Talking about the Internet, I just read your comments on Jonathan's blog. Could you tell us more about your son's start-up experience? I for one would be very interested.

Thank you.

Hi, Bill - I don't think Steve would consider me qualified to say much more about his company, but you can read a lot about it on the "about" page of the corporate website.

Margaret, my daughter had her son taken (only for two week) before the police found the father and brought them both back. Your right!  The time spent in jail is not enough.  A hand slap and promise to never do it again doesn't work in my book.

What a nice story about the power of the internet and the reuniting of the boy with his mom. Why people do these things and don't realize the trauma it has on a child is beyond me. I too believe it is not enough punishment to do that to a child.

Oops, Sorry!  Thought it was all connected.  I do still love the sign and the fact that the little boy is back with his Mom.

Margaret - What an interesting post.  That is terrific news for the mom and the little boy.  I agree with you that this punishment is patently inadequate.

Kay, I think the worst part may be not knowing for sure where your child is.  It's bad enough when the culprit is a non-custodial parent, but the child could be lost or possibly abducted by a stranger.  Glad your daughter got her son back!

Thesa, I agree on the punishment, but ain't the Internet grand sometimes?!

Hi, Sally, This is a happy ending!

Julie, No prob... I just don't want to hear from the people in North Carolina...  who knows, their penalties could be more or less.

Jason.  Good news is right.  Just think of what this story means to our real estate business - through the Internet, you can reach people in the most unlikely places.

Margaret:  What a great and inspiring story.  Besides showing the power of the internet, it also shows what happens when people, in this case, a group of library staff workers, care enough to pay attention and get involved.  Hooray For Them !

MARGARET:  It's always a nice way to strart the day (even this early) with Woda's Words Of Wisdom!  I am amazed at the power of the Internet.  I share your disgust for a system that treats horrible crimes with no more than a slap on the wrist.  By the way, that sign for Bryson City makes it seem like a very inviting place to live.

Adam, I agree about that sign!  When we do finally retire, my "places to visit" list is probably going to come from ActiveRain!

Karen, Good morning!  You're so right.  I wonder if I've ever deleted an email like that without taking the time to read it.

Paula, It's nice to read a "good" Internet story, isn't it?  Law enforcement must LOVE the fact that the long arm of the law is now helped by the long arm of the Internet.

NONE of you know the whole story about this, just what you've heard and read.  This wasn't some random kidnapping, it was a Father who got screwed out of the legal system, and felt he had no other choice.  When and if YOU get in the same predicament, I doubt you'll be feeling the same way about this.

S (IP: 96.231.161.68) - This is a story about the long arm of the Internet, and how our Internet marketing can reach places we might never have imagined.

It has little if anything to do with specifics of this case - it's just a vehicle to make the point about Internet marketing.  Your comment adds another dimension to the point of this story - and that is the fact that our Internet marketing is out there for a long time, and might generate interested readers long after it is published.
