Beware of strangers handing out business cards

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Ft Myers & The Islands

I received an email from someone I know today.  She wanted to share what had been passed on to her.

If you are a woman watch out for a stranger who appears to be a painter or in construction.  He may be at the gas pumps, grocery store or anywhere .  He approaches you in a public place and ask if you or anyone you know might be looking for a painter.  The woman he approached said no she didn't.  He then asked if she would take his business card and if she hears of anyone needing  his services please give them his card.  She then took it and placed in her handbag.  She drove off and noticed that the guy and a friend in anothet car were following her.  She started feeling a bit strange, disoriented and couldn't catch her breath.  Fortunately for her she still was conscious enough to pull into a driveway and lay on the horn.  They drove off.  She later learned that the business card had been laced with a drug far stronger than the "date rape" drug.  The police told her that they were planning on robbing her and that she was very lucky.  So ladies be careful and guys look out for us too.

Share this with someone you know, it might save their life.

I haven't heard of this happening here in Houston TX.  I'm always aware of my surroundings, and if something is strange, I would just ignore them.

As a hander-outer of business cards, I hate to see this rumor gain much traction. Snopes.com categorizes this one as an urban myth: Business card

I know I've heard this story before, and I hope that it does not actually happen. Good work Liz verifying on snopes.

Now that does function as a public service announcement.  That is truly scary.

Sounds like, "No thanks and no touch" should be the motto.

Perhaps I'm naive, and I'm no medical professional, but I am skeptical that a drug exists that would work so quickly through skin contact. Further the person handing out the card would be just as susceptible to the same effects requiring that person to be wearing rubber gloves to avoid such.
