I know thst sounds silly...but it just might be.  As a ASP home stager I come across many times.  It sits in that room like it is king and it owns that room.  Homeowners are so reluctant to give it up during the selling prrocess.  If you have a room with one or two recliners greeting whoever walks in that room it may be time to move it to storage.  Once you get your house on the market "'the way you live in your home is not the way you sell your house" It is now a product, so you have to present it like one.

Think of it like this...your house is now one of 6  products on the grocerers shelf.  They are all pretty much the same, same size, same square footage same amenities.  So how are we going to get the buyers/consumers to take your house off the shelf.?

Recliners and big TV's take over a room,    old recliner

I council my sellers to think of it like this. You are moving right? So start packing everything up you don't need on a daily basis.  Next look at your house through the buyers eyes.  Can you see the focal point of the room, does your firerplace have "stuff" all over the mantel, does your kitchen counters have all those little things you make piles for?   Not de cluttering,, and removing furniture will cost you money. If you are planning to get rid of it , then just do it now. Are you willing to leave equity on the table?  Think about it, is that recliner worth $5000.

When I see old recliners....says "Grandma & Grandpa's House".  Really have to agree that they are not inviting to potential buyers.  They also take up soooo much room and visual space.  Not the way to showcase your home for sure!

LOL irony oh irony- just ordered a new cover for a recliner that has seen better.  The client agreed to declutter,  how ever the old recliner was off limits.  So I ordered a new cover .  Can't make this stuff up.

So true!  As a professional home stager I always advise my seller clients to put the recliner in storage for their next home.  They take up too much floor space and buyers can't "see" beyond them.  Not to mention how dated they look -- especially the ones with the crocheted blanket over the back!

AJ--A Realtor called me Friday to ask me to do a walk-through consultation for one of her new listings.  The home has been on the market for two weeks, so I checked out the listing and photos.  Front and center of the living room photo is a pale green over-sized recliner!  Another one that needs to go to storage and another conversation about how they can't live without it.  I encourage people to store them off site and suggest that they will be reunited with them faster in a new home if they remove them for selling this one.

Thanks for all your post.  Recliners are tough but what a difference when they listen to their agents or home stagers.

AJ-

I know how you feel. I can't stand recliners! And the bad thing is, if I tell my Homeowners that we need to 'update' their look and remove the recliner, they just look perplexed. You see, a few of our local furniture stores proudly display many, many recliner models. So my Homeowners see these recliners front and center in the furniture stores and think I am the crazy one for saying that recliners are 'dated'.....I mean after all, if the local furniture guys are selling them so proudly, then they MUST be the current style, right? Quoting Michelle - you just 'can't make this stuff up'!!!

Great points AJ, We have one in our house too, and I see them in many consults, that, the huge sectional and giant TVs...a seller's (and stager's)curse:)
