By
Real Estate Agent with 16 Sunview Blvd

Fort Myers Beach Sand Bash is here and runs through Sunday April 3, 2011.   Our island and amazing beaches is lucky enough to have two sand sculpting events !  The newest event is called the Fort Myers Beach Sand Bash and is in its first year.  Headquartered at the Fort Myers Beach Holiday Inn the event is open to visitors daily until the final judging on April 3, 2011.

This event is different in that there will be nine 2 man/woman  teams working on carvings over two stories in height and over 400 square feet at the base.  A $10,000 purse is helping attract mastor carvers from all over. Event organizers promise to have about double the number of shuttles as for past events.

Admission is $8 / day for adults with kids under 5 admitted free.  Four day passes are $20 for adults.  Fun, games, vendors, food and some amazing sand carvings await young and old. These pictures are from the 2010 Sand Sculptin event.

Hi Bill, I love this and it certainly defines the true artistic ability these sand sculptures have .. fabulous images. The white sand really adds almost a marble look.

Hi Ellie, Patience, and a heap of talent is all it takes ! Hi William, thanks for the kind words. Ironically, we woke up this morning to a pretty good rain storm. They are just building the forms so I hope nothing washed away !

Hi Beth,  This will be our second sand carving event and I hope it is successful.  Had a hard rain yesterday and that may have caused some problems.  Good selling to you !

Hi Debra,  The event draws about 30-40,000 visitors to the island.  Rain and high winds were a problem earlier in the week but they are back on track !

Bill, how they do this is simply amazing to me- such talent!  How long do the sculptures stay after the contest...do they just wash away?

Hi Mary,  I agree.  The talent level is truly amazing.  They have a sprayed on liquid consisting of water and white Elmer's Glue which helps protect them from the drying wind and sun.  They last for quite a while and eventually start to deteriorate.  Glad you enjoyed the pics.  Later today I will post the final pics of this years contest !

I’m always amazed at what sand sculptors can do with sand. I could never get my sand castle to last more than a few minutes.

Hi Jim,  Nice to hear from you !  At this level of competition they use a mixture of Elmers' White Glue and water to spray on the finsihed sculpting.  The spray slows the evaporation of water and helps keep the surface from crumbling.

Ah, now we're talking. Beaches, sand, sand castles. I could get lost at the beach and never make it home.
