The road less travelled!

Yes, I am going down a road I have not travelled in the past.  My partner has a young man whom used to work with him that is taking up marketing.  He needs to do an internship with a company as part of his class.  On Friday, he came by the office to offer this to us for seven weeks, no cost, no expenses just him working on our marketing.

I do most of the marketing for my partner and myself as I represent only buyers and they have been scarce to say the least and I have had the time.  I have spent countless hours over the course of the last two months getting our website www.myremaxtoday.com up to speed from what it was to what it is now.  I am not finished with it by far but it is much better and more user friendly when I started on it.

So, along with my many other hats, I will be shadowed by this young man for the next seven weeks.  Talk about pressure to perform, lol.  I am looking at it as a great tool, fresh inovative ideas, and a great way to learn more about marketing. Honestly, I can't wait to travel this road and see where it leads.  Something to get me turned around in this overwhelmingly slow market.

Today, I am concentrating on making a list of what we have going on right now with marketing, checking my closet to see what I really should be wearing (we have been really lax in dress attire IMO), and trying to come up with what to do with this young man for the next seven weeks.

My question to you all at AR is this -- If you were handed this opportunity, what would you do with a free marketing student? (No, lewd comments, lol)  What would you present to him on his first day in the office? Or, would you let him present to you?

Not sure at all where this long winding road will lead but I am sure it will be a learning experience for the both of us.

Ah Marketing!  On the first day, I would present to him the focus and direction of the company - the goals and objectives.  I'd also ask to see what he has - since he's been studying this - what a fantastic opportunity for both of you!  I'd love for you to post again and let us know how this works out.

Truthfully, I would just let him shadow what you do. Since all our days are different it would be interesting to him, 7 weeks is a long time. After you get to know him better, his skills let his creativity fly.

Pattie--I do plan on doing updates to this as I think it is a great opportunity.

Missy--yep that is sort of the plan with a little bit of what Pattie suggested thrown in to boot.

I would have him analyze what I currently do and refine it.  Tell him to look at the 6 Sigma methodology and use it to refine your current marketing.

OK, since I am no marketing guru I have to ask -- What is the 6 Sigma methodology so that I won't appear stooooppppiiiddd when I ask this of him.

This is off-topic, but I can't resist mentioning that I noticed your web site bears the name of your brokerage affiliation. Would you believe that when I worked for Prudential, I registered a couple of domains with our city and the Prudential name in them, and was immediately contacted by Prudential, telling me that none of their agents were allowed to use the Prudential name. I've always wondered if that meant that agents from other brokerages could use the Prudential name in their web site domain name ;)

Hey Lisa--yeah broker registered this one actually tried to register another similar one but RE/MAX shot them down and suggested this one, go figure, lol.

I would be curious to hear his ideas since he is the wave of the future.  His generation will soon out-number us as home buyers.  My daughter is a marketing graduate of recent times and she is constantly giving me fresh ideas to try.  I know that you are proud of the work you have done to your website but ask him what he would look for in a realtor website and listen carefully to his suggestions.  This seven weeks might be a real Blessing!  I can't wait to hear your follow-up reports.

I would like to see his/her presentation first.  I have a feeling the student would be teaching the so called master in my case.  LOL

Linda, I would think that my first sit down with this guy would be an open conversation of where we were, where we are, and where we want to go. After that, pick his brain for ideas that will take you where you want to go.

I would have him research the best online tools and places to take our services to the internet.

It turned out better than I thought but he left due to financial reasons in his personal life before we could actually see any benefit from this Rick.
