What’s unique about Crystal City?

Ronald Reagan National Airport

Let's start with its history. Crystal City gets its name from Crystal House, the first building built when the neighborhood was redeveloped in the 1960s; before that, it was mostly just industrial sites. The neighborhood grew and today more than 6,000 people live and around 60,000 people work in Crystal.

Today, Crystal City, located in the southeastern part of Arlington County, lies along U.S. Route 1 and has direct access to I-395 and GW Parkway. Those needing to travel farther will enjoy that Ronald Reagan National Airport is in Crystal City and Arlington. In addition, Crystal City is near the Potomac River and close to the capital. In fact, views of the capital can be seen from Crystal City.

But just because the capital is close doesn't mean residents need to go there. Probably the most unique part of Crystal City is its intricate underground concourses. Residents don't have to leave city limits to get all necessary commodities. Many buildings have access to the underground area that can be used to move around from office buildings, apartments, shops, restaurants and more without ever going outside.

The underground contains the Crystal City Shopping Arcade and the Crystal City Metro Station, whcih is on the blue and yellow lines. Crystal City also has bus lines and its own Virginia Rail Express station to Fredericksburg and Manassas lines.

When it's time to head outdoors, residents, visitors and employees find office buildings, hotels, high-rise apartment buildings, houses, townhouses, shops, restaurants and more. Plus, despite being an urban neighborhood, sidewalks are lined with quaint-looking trees and bricks. Parks and lovely outdoor spaces fill the neighborhood, and now they're more convenient than ever because Crystal City residents can enjoy free WiFi access throughout the city.

In conclusion, maybe the better question to ask would be what's ordinary about Crystal City? Not much.

I used to go to that mall all the time when I lived in DC.  Nice to know where the name came from - I always wondered.
