Have you ever wanted to create a personal logo?  The first option you considered may have been to create some artsy version of your initials, unless you have a name that just begs for something else (like Block, or House or Valentine).

A google image search of my initials provided many examples of using MW to create a logo, including these:

 Model Works logo

 Monster Warrior logo

   Meghan Weir logo

Well, I came across an article today about this very subject in Before & After Magazine, Design a Logo of Letters.  The link should take you to the PDF file but, if it doesn't, just go to this link for Before & After Magazine and download from there.  I think it's worth bookmarking, because you might want to go back and look at the article for ideas whenever you do get around to creating a personal logo.

I always thought the right leg of the M (for lack of a better term) could flow naturally into the left leg of the W in my initials... or maybe they could be on top of each other, with the W almost like a reflection of the M.  Well, I learned that what I want to do is create a ligature, such as GE, ADT, Lowes, or Applebees.  ('Learn something new every day!)  It turns out that Monster Warrior and Meghan Weir both have versions of my first idea, and Model Works has another interpretation of my mirror image idea.

The article suggests (and shares examples of) shared strokes or almost identical strokes, lower case to upper case, horizontal or mid level crossbars, and many other creative ideas.  I think you'll find it a short, easy, interesting and inspiring read.  If you already have a logo of letters, please post it in the comments.  Maybe you could tell us how you created it and how it works for you.  If you don't, I'll try to find one using your initials when I acknowledge your comment.  This should be a lot of fun for everybody!

P.S.  Paula Henry says she uses the logoMaker.  I took a quick look, and you can try it out FREE.

Margaret-That was funny to me to look over and see your blog about initials and logos.  I met with a graphic designer last week to come up with a logo for me that includes my tag line.  It's going to cost $30.00.  I love this website you found though.  I'm curious to see what others have done to create their logos as well.  Another great post!

Here's a logo with your initials, Missy - This is an Australian daysailor called a Mini-cupper.

logoJulie, here's a logo made with JN - It's the logo for John Noott and his art galleries.

logoPamela, I thought this PW was really neat, combining Pete Wilson's initials with his cycling hobby or business

Margaret - I have enjoyed both of your posts today.  I will check out the link you provided.  Thanks for sharing these ideas!

09/30/2007 02:06 PM by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (Austin Texas Homes, LLC)

Maria, I actually found a logo with all three of your initials, MLC, although the letters are not in the right order.  It's for the Materials Chemistry Lab at Seoul University

Jason, I thought this was really a cool logo for jc electronics.  I also like the one for Jubilate Chorale.

09/30/2007 02:17 PM by Margaret Woda, Maryland REALTOR (RE/MAX VISION)

Good ideas Margaret.  We have many customers that have used this technique in their marketing program.

09/30/2007 02:36 PM by Larry Wright (nwRealty.Com)

Margaret, I read through the PDF but I couldn't find where to design. I got so intrigued I googled free logos. I designed one, it was OK, then to download it they want 29.99 Free right. Where are you finding these, I'd like to play around some more.

09/30/2007 02:44 PM by Missy Caulk Ann Arbor Real Estate (Keller Williams Ann Arbor)

Thanks for this timely post.  I am currently working with an on-line logo company who has presented me with nothing to show for my money.  This is a great site you have shared with us. Thanks!

logo

Larry, this is the logo for Ludwig Wagner.  You mentioned that you have customers who use this technique - I'd love it if you would post some examples.

logoMissy, That was a PDF document so I don't know believe the article had a tool for designing logos - wouldn't that be fun! - but they gave some wonderful examples and you might want to check out the magazine's main website.  By the way, this is Meadow Creek Tennis & Fitness Club.

Sandy - at the very least, the article might give you some good ideas to help you recognize whether it's good proposal or a bad one, so you can respond accordingly.  Here is an SB logo for Summer Brooke Community.

I'm armed with logos and just waiting to hear from you Katerina Gasset, Sally Cheeseman, Donna Yates, Bob Carney, Adam Waldman, Brian Block, Patricia Kennedy, David Fox...

Very cool Margaret!

Do you have a program that you use? I always wanted to try all three of my initials: DLD

09/30/2007 04:19 PM by Debbie DiFonzo, United Country VIP Realty, SW Missouri

Margaret,

I was going to do a logo with my initials, but ADT Security Logo someone beat me to it. The good thing is that I can use on of those "This home protected by ADT" signs and really mean it.

09/30/2007 04:47 PM by Andrew Trevino Wilkes-Barre Homes For Sale (TradeMark Realtors Group)

Margaret, here I am.  So what logo do you have for me?

09/30/2007 05:01 PM by Brian Block -- Northern Virginia & D.C. Real Estate (RE/MAX Allegiance)

LOL I looked and have "difficult initials".  This was entertaining.  Thank you!

09/30/2007 05:14 PM by Debbie White (Southeast Alaska Real Estate)

logo

Debbie, I don't have DLD for you, but I do have DD - This is the logo for Democracy Dispatches.  I actually like the one better for Dwight Fine Arts, but wasn't sure you would consider that a DD

Andrew, I couldn't find a good one, so I made one for you using Word Art in MS Publisher.  Now people can tell you apart from the other ADT

logo

Okay, Brian - It was surprisingly NOT easy to find a BB logo, and I really like your blocks (on the card you showed me), but here's what I finally found - Blumenbacher, an enginerring firm in Slovakia.

logo

Debbie - I think this logo used by Drums for Less is a good one for DW.  'Don't know that it would work for you, and it is already taken.

09/30/2007 05:24 PM by Margaret Woda, Maryland REALTOR (RE/MAX VISION)

Margaret - I do like that better than the one in the PDF.  Of course, I couldn't use it exactly, but it gives me some ideas.  Thanks again.

09/30/2007 05:47 PM by Debbie White (Southeast Alaska Real Estate)

Margaret:  I like the Monster Warrior Log myself but that's my 2cents worth.  I have always doodled with my initials and with some sort of mountain logo but I didn't know about searching on Google for this.  I have to run to the office, just got a phone call, but I am bookmarking this one so I can study it more closely.  If I only knew half the great stuff you know...   You are awesome.

Margaret - This is a fun post - I have used logoMaker - they have a fun site for trying out Logos.

Margaret,   I have always liked the initial logo since I was in grade school.  I went to school in a town with this type logo.   Mineral Wells the town and school used a block M with the block W through the each other if you know what I mean.  I do have one for myself but only do it when signing my initials.

Margaret- What an interesting post! Are you left brained dominant? Charts, logos, statistical data, etc? You are sure good at this kind of stuff. Not me! I love the idea of a Logo, I have a great LOGO I did for our Company, International Properties and Investments, Inc. International Properties and Investments

I had the same issue with My initials (MH) so I tried my team initials (APT) still no good.  I settled on a logo that did not include my initials.  It seems to be working though!!

logo

Hi, Donna.  All the logos I'm sharing are examples of a ligature, but they are logos currently in use by companies or people.  They're not ones that any of us should consider stealing or borrowing.  By the way, this is Dennis Yang's logo (as David Fox pointed out, it's the hp logo upside down).  Hopefully everyone will get an idea or two from these examples.

logo

Paula, I'll have to try logoMaker.  Thanks for suggesting it.  Here is the logo for Possum Hollow Farms.  I kinda like the way they combine the p ahd H, don't you?

logo

Don, I'll have to try and find Mineral Wells online so I can check it out.  Thanks!  In the meantime, here's the logo for data ens-lyon, which shares initials with you.

Margaret Wodalogo

These are the concepts I envisioned for myself.  I created them using MS Pub.  If I had a more sophisitcated way of doing this, I might like to see a script font.

logoKaterina, I am so glad you commented because I've been saving one for you.  I have absolutely no idea what it stands for, but here's the link.  Isn't this cool looking?  By the way, I love your logo for International properties!

I honestly think that combined initial logo's are some of the best out there--very classy!

Oh, and Dennis Yangs Logo is an upside down HP logo

09/30/2007 08:59 PM by David Fox, The Real Estate Tech Desk (The Real Estate Tech Desk)

Great post - Terrific logos - Can't wait to see what you come up with!

That's a great document Margaret.  Thanks for sharing it with us! I need a logo to use as a watermark on my photos on my website.  Very Handy!

Sandra - Here's the logo for the Santee Cowboys, who share your initials.  I really like the way the letters interlock.

The All Pro Team - I like your logo.  Very nice!

David, I have been saving a really neat one for you.  It appears to be the logo for Devil Fish, a music group performing at cybersonica 07. By the way, thanks for pointing out the Dennis Yang logo is HP upside down.  I wondered why it looked so familiar!

logo

Hi, David - The one I came up with for me was posted in one of my previous comments.  Glad you're enjoing this little display.  Here is the loo for Daniel Teplitz.

logo

Shannon, This is Stacy Lee Farber's logo.  Obviously you can't use hers, but it's always nice to see what other people are doing.

Oh..it's been here in front of my eyes....

Whoa...what a bunch of info....I'd like to do a logo ....I'd also like to do a slogan too. I've been thinking for a few years and still wanting that just right one. Bookmarked to research later....thanks!

09/30/2007 10:22 PM by Celeste "SALLY" Cheeseman (RA), e-PRO HAWAII Real Estate & HAWAII Relocation (Century 21 Liberty Homes -Mililani, Hawaii)

Wow, Margaret! You are so resourceful. I've been looking for a way to combine all three of my initials (INP)  into a logo, so I can promote my "brand" over my company. Thanks for the tips.

09/30/2007 10:56 PM by Ilyce N. Powell, CMPS™ - Certified Mortgage Planning Specialist (Envision Lending Group)

Sally - We're on the same page with waiting for the right slogan. Good luck to you.

Margaret thank you so much for adding another tool to my arsenal.

10/01/2007 02:17 AM by Dionne Morgan REALTOR®,GRI, e-PRO (Realty World Solano Realty)

Sally Cheeseman
Sally, Sandra Cummings got here before you to claim the SC logo I found earlier, so I had to create one especially for you.  Unlike most of the logo examples posted here, you CAN use it because I created it and I'm going to send you the file.

logoIlyce, Who knew I could find several logos in use with those three initials.  This one was for Introductory Learning Program, Oxford University.  I think this has some potential, but I would be tempted to have side-by-side straight lines with the bottom of the L and top of the P overlapping on the right line.  Is that understandable?

logo

Dionne, This is the logo used by DataMaersk, Inc.

logo

David, here's the logo used by David Barrett, but there are several good DB logos.  You might want to check them out for ideas so you can come up with your own.

10/01/2007 07:30 AM by Margaret Woda, Maryland REALTOR (RE/MAX VISION)

Hi Margaret. Thanks. That's really different. Did you see any with an "N" instead of "L"? Not to complain, but my initials are I N P (no L). (smile)

10/01/2007 08:57 AM by Ilyce N. Powell, CMPS™ - Certified Mortgage Planning Specialist (Envision Lending Group)

Margaret,  Isn't this making you a little bleary eyed?  I have never looked into a logo, ut I suspect you have tweaked my curiosity enough to send me looking.  I do have email literature that matches the design of my website - it receives very favorable comments, Karen

10/01/2007 09:47 AM by Karen Kruschka - Fairfax Prince William Stafford County VA Real Estate Service (RE/MAX Allegiance)

Very cool!  I like this.  I have a logo, but love messing around sites like this.  Thanks for the information.

10/01/2007 09:50 AM by Patsy Ittner, Your Premier Broker Selling St. Augustine Real Estate (Little Fox Realty)

Ilyce - I thought that had more potential to inspire an idea than this one.  Except for Sally's and Andrew's (which I created), all of these logos already belong to someone else, and you obviously can't use them anyway.  I encourage you to do your own online search or click through on the link in my post to read the article and see dozens of ideas using the letters I, N, and P.

kk logo

Karen, yes it is making me bleary-eyed, but I have enjoyed it. Okay, here's the logo for kultur konzept.

pi logo

Hi, Patsy, Here's a cool logo for Project Interactive, that shares your initials

10/02/2007 09:23 AM by Adam Waldman - Long Island REALTOR® (RE/MAX Best)

AW

Adam, I can't claim credit because I didn't create that - I found it online.  It's actually the logo for All World Digital Media.  Here's another one with your initials, although it's a little feminine for you:  Alliance Women of Australia.  I just thought it was neat the way they made an "A" in the middle of the "W".

10/02/2007 06:12 PM by Margaret Woda, Maryland REALTOR (RE/MAX VISION)

I love this idea - I have been trying to figure out a way to use my initials - TLC - this is a great idea

Thesa and Pat - I promise to find logos made with your initials, but I can't do it before Sunday at the earliest... maybe even Monday.  'Trying to get my new blog site up and running and answer all of Adam's interview questions for his Blogging Sunday Blogging post.

Vincent, here's one I found online for V and M - It is Vince Marino Plumbing

Beth - Of course the obvious one is BP - the fuel.  But here is Badger press

 Pete, here's PC Graphics' logo

David and Kristen - I couldn't find any ks, just DS for Discovery Science
