Hello, Recently I found myself walking through Port Washington with my dog Lars. He usually is the first one to find the comotion or focus in on the main activity. We walked down by the docks and runs and it was time for the Salmon to make their incredible run up steam to allow production of their species, as they have for what we know as millions. The elder men all line up with a frozen spawn sac and if the hungry Salmon bites it he is snagged into the air and his journey is incomplete. When I first cameto this place about ten years ago I had the mis fortune of getting hit by a spawn sac. It must weigh about 3 pounds. I stood up after it knocked me down. I thought some kid through a rock at me. It was a spawn sac. I really do not go out of my way to admit such a thing. JUst another way of Mother Nature keeping track of everythings biological clock. Thank You Tom BRaatz |
Oh how I miss the days of the Fall Salmon run on Lake Michigan... Spawn Sacs are clusters of Salmon Eggs usually in netting so they stay on the hook. Salmon come into the Harbors & Steams where they were stocked 4 years prior. They come in to do Mother Natures thing and then they die off. Its amazing to see the size of some of the fish...
Tom, feel free anytime to post some pics of the Lake I miss so much..
Faith, The strangest thing you can see. Salmon going nuts to get up stream to spawn and die. Talk about a mission! Tommy |
Brian, A spawn sac is a little 2-3 pound bad of frozen fish eggs. Hurts like a rock Tommy |
Jo, It is an interesting site to say the least. Frozen bags of fish eggs luring these 20 pound plus fishes wipping through the air. Kind of freaky. Later Sunshine Tombo |
