What Does Jim Carrey Being Booed Off Stage At His First Stand-Up Act and BPO Work Have In Common?

Here is how the story about Jim Carrey goes and even though it is hard for me to imagine this, I remember hearing that when Jim was just 14 years old, he had his first stand-up performance at a comedy club called 'Yuk-Yuks' in Toronto, Canada and subsequently got booed off of the stage. For many people this negative experience would have left such a bitter taste in their mouth that they likely wouldn't have been brave enough to try their hand at performing again, but not Jim.

A few years later, he came back to the same comedy club much better prepared and had his act all prepared and polished. This time around he knocked the audiences socks off and became a club favorite and one of the top stand-up performers in Toronto for years to come.

Fast forward about 30 years and now Jim is an enormous success, plus he is one of my all-time favorite comedic actors. He is right up there next to my all-time favorite, Lucille Ball.

As I think about the very small chance that I will ever be able to meet or talk to Jim Carrey, I can't help but ponder various questions I'd love to ask him.....here is one:

"When you first got started as an actor in Hollywood, were you choosy about which movies you acted in?" I would venture to say that I bet his answer would be a quick, 'NO!' Then I could picture him calling me a big "L----A----W-----H----O----Z-----A----H----E----R" or better known as a loser. (That's one of my favorite lines that he says from one of his movies that cracks me up every time.)

If I could put myself in his place, I would see myself accepting almost anything that came my way when I first got my feet wet, but after gaining more experience, I can guarantee that I would become a lot more selective about the movies I would act in and not fear retaliation because I would have already paid my dues......well this same logic should apply to choosing which companies you do BPO work for.

I am hoping that you were able to pull out the similarities between the example I used and how this applies to how you handle your BPO work. Are you being selective enough about the companies your choose to do BPO work for?

Here are a few tell-tale signs that you will want to look out for to ensure that you are making good choices:

1. If you have been in the business long enough and have consistent volume but are working for companies that are slow/no pay, you probably need to rethink why you continue to work for companies that don't take care of you, like you take care of them.

2. You may find that you do the majority of your BPO work for only 1 or 2 companies. You know the saying about 'putting all your eggs in one basket' right? Don't do it, I can guarantee that it will backfire and leave you vulnerable at the most inopportune time.

3. Are you getting enough business from the companies you enjoy best working for? If not, you may want to seriously consider getting educated on and incorporating BPO automation software. AutoAccept software will help you gain more orders, while AutoFill software will enable you to fine tune your craft and help turn your end product into a masterpiece that important decision makers will be in awe over, hopefully to the point that they pay attention to the quality of your work.

4. Are you in a place where you are using the same tired lines and methods when doing your BPO work and don't see your business expanding. If so, then please consider seeking out educational opportunities to see how to improve your BPO orders, your turnaround time and reduce your quality review kickbacks.

5. Lastly, at the end of the day do you enjoy what you do? I seriously hope so, because if you don't then I am sure that Jim Carrey would agree that the money that is enjoyed by success is great, but selling out for money will leave you lost spiritually and mentally at the end of the day.

Make sure to stand up for yourselves in this industry, never take less than you deserve and always keep an open mind and heart to always learning.

Best wishes and good night,

Nicole Ocean

p.s. Jim if you are listening, I love you man! :-)

One of my biggest problems with BPO agents is that they send out of area agents to do the BPO and they are pulling properties to be comps that shouldn't even be comps and everytime has forced it to be higher then the actual value and causing problems with the short sales.. Great analogy to Jim Carey.. Definately one of my favorites.
