Moose hunt ruined...

By
Managing Real Estate Broker with Southeast Alaska Real Estate RECB 15265

My husband and I have both entered the Gustavus moose permit drawing for years.

Over 1600 applications were received, and only 60 permits issued by random drawing.

At last, my husband's name was among the "lucky ones".

We were looking forward to having moose in the freezer and a few days in the great outdoors.

Because the winter mortality rate last season was so high, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has completely cancelled the anter-less hunt.  The bull hunt is already over.

As much as we try to understand the reasoning behind the decision, it stinks when you spend lots of money on these drawings year after year.

Glad you were a winner. Enjoy it and take some photos so we can see it. It will be alligator season here fairly soon. I have never had an interest in catching one however.

Brandon - Amazingly few people here even know what blogging is.  I've sent out tons of invites.  I am the only local person on AR.

Our market is slower than what we are accustomed to.  While the change is hard on the pocketbook, and frustrating, I hope it serves to get part-timers out of the business.

My remote properties are what is really keeping me alive right now.  We've seen a lot of buyer hesitation.  It doesn't help that good news doesn't sell papers, but that's another blog entirely :)

Thanks for stopping by!

Eric - Gators are good eating.  I wish I could provide photos, but the moose hunt was cancelled by F&G.

I'm not a hunter, but I really do enjoy my time in the "other" world.  Maybe you should grab a camera and go out and experience the thrill of the hunt.  One of my best shots was of a wolf I shot during deer season.  While we were all around the campfire, I took the picture over someone's shoulder.  He was just watching us.

Lane - Fine idea, but I do take photos when it's not hunting season.  Here's a mamma cinnamon black with her two cubs, one charcoal, one with her coloring.  Too bad I caught them going instead of coming.  It would have been a great photo!"Black" Bears at the glacier

Debbie, don't tell my you would actually eat a moose?  Just kidding.

I still haven't given up hope, there is an archery season here for a couple more weeks.  I don't bother applying for permits anymore.

Feel free to take up Salmon fishing and if your freezer gets to full, you can pack the salmon in ice and send it down to me!

Debbie that is terrible to work so hard and long to get a tag and have the season cancelled.  If you ever want to hunt something bigger that Moose you can come down to Western Iowa and chase Iowa Whitetail on our farm in the Loess Hills.

Marty -  You've kinda been MIA the last few weeks.  I remember when my kids wouldn't eat beef!  I had better luck keeping moose in the freezer when I'd cook meals for the hunters to take on the trips.

Todd - I prefer halibut.  In fact, I think some is coming out of the freezer in the morning :)

Eric - Geese are good too!  Bullwinkles is a pizza parlor in these parts.

Jason - Moose weigh in a bit heavier than your deer but if you have a farm they can be pretty destructive.  Time to "harvest" the deer!

I was joking Debbie- but our Iowa Whitetail are well know for their size.  Our deer don't destroy to many crops, we plant food plots and provide supplements for them to keep them out of the corn and soybeans.

Jason - Ah... but hopefully you do harvest your venison crop as well :)

I really didn't think you honestly thought your deer were that big.  Well, I hoped so, anyway!
