Cleaning cat smell out of that carpet.

By
Real Estate Agent with Howard Hanna - Avon Lake, OH 2006004434

This one comes from Cassandra Mandello on how to clean up cat accidents out of carpet.  Before I share this one I should add that listing agents need to be honest with their clients about cleaning pet urine smells. Explain to the owner that people that do not have this problem will have a much more sensitive nose to the smell.  It is simply how are nosess work, they adjust and accept when you are the pet owner.  This may also mean asking a friend you know that can be honest to tell you waht they smell whne htey first walk in the house andwhere it smells the strongest.  Anyway back to cleaning cat urine:

1.  If the cat has recently urinated on the carpet, first absorb as much of the cat urine as possible using paper towels or an old towel. Place clean paper towels over the cat urine area and tread on them so as to absorb as much of the urine as possible. Repeat with dry towels until no more moisture can be absorbed.

Areas of cat urine that have dried and previously gone undetected can be found with the aid of a black light. The cat urine stains will fluoresce under the ultra violet light in a darkened room. Hand held black lights are quite inexpensive, usually costing $15 - $25. To save the expense of a black light you can always use your nose to detect the source of the odor. Put your nose down close to the carpet and sniff away.

2.   Next, wet the area with a solution of 50% white vinegar and 50% water. Make sure you use enough of the solution to penetrate the fibers deep down.

After the vinegar treatment dry off the carpet as much as possible. You can assist drying by blotting with paper towels as described above. If you own a wet/dry vacuum extractor use that to remove excess moisture.

3.  Apply a handful of baking soda over the affected area and drizzle it with a quarter of a cup of hydrogen peroxide mixed with a teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent. (not caustic detergent that you put in a dishwasher) Work it in with a scrubbing brush or your fingers (be sure to wear rubber gloves) to dissolve the baking soda and work it down well into the carpet. Allow it to dry. Once dry the baking powder will vacuum up easily taking all the odors with it.

That's all there is to it. It's as simple as that. 1-2-3 cat pee smell gone. It really does work.

The vinegar will neutralize the ammonia and hydrogen peroxide is a powerful oxidizer capable of killing bacteria, which cause the urine smells. Baking soda is a well known deodorizer which absorbs odors. Sprinkle it on your carpet monthly then vacuum up to keep your carpet smelling fresh all the time.

Important. Never use ammonia or ammonia-based products on the carpet. One of the ingredients of urine is ammonia and your cat may well be encouraged to re-offend in the same area if it detects the smell of ammonia. Many household cleaner cleaners contain ammonia so be sure to read the label.

If you don't have hydrogen peroxide on hand you could substitute it in an emergency for a spray laundry stain remover. Check the bottle. If it says 'Oxy' anywhere on the label then it probably contains hydrogen peroxide.

Caution, you should test your carpet for color fastness in an inconspicuous area.
Use only 3% Hydrogen Peroxide.

Struggling to search for Avon Lake, Avon, North Ridgeville, Sheffield Lake and Sheffield Village Homes?  Need some easier way to do it on the go?  Trulia
and Zillow are great programs however they are not local.  They are not current to activity at the minute and projections on values of homes are questionable based on global measures and not having local information as a local Realtor would.  So what to do? Add my search engine to your mobile devise or  computer and get direct and current home sales, open houses, know when a home is off the market and sold right away and find similar homes in the area.  The search engine has GPS function that you can activate on your phone  and with that it will give you comparables while you are in the driveway of that dream home.  Now how cool is that?

Try it.   http://stanleystepak.hanna2go.com

Just had a bad situation with a renter that had a ton of cats. Was a nightmare to clean up after they moved out.

Very true warning. People with NO cats will really be able to pick up on the smell. Trust me on this (and you, of course).

Stan - that is awesome advice. We really don't recognize the various smells of the spaces we live in day after day.

I love cats.  We are "cat people".

But I know that if a cat wets the floor or sprays the wall (especially an un-neutered male cat), it is just about impossible to get rid of the odor without ripping out the carpet.

* Good comment about "No Ammonia"... that is like pouring gasoline on a fire.

Great steps!  I had a cat a few houses ago that peed in a corner...  and we had to just tear up the carpet and start over...  Wish I would have done this!

This is a good solution as long as it has not saturated the subfloor.  I have used this very method and it also works on dog urine as well.  Hard to do if the entire carpet is saturated.  I once viewed a home where the owner had been in the hospital for a while leaving her 20 or 30 cats alone in the home.  It was a nightmare!!!!  You started smelling it when you pulled into the driveway and once inside it was a real eye watering experience.  That home needed to just be burned down.

My cat just had her first 'accident' ever, on the cedar flooring we just installed on the closet floor. We were planning to replace it, but I'm going to try this first. Thanks!

I’ve had cats all my life but never had one use anything other than the outdoors or a little box, even my male cats. Maybe I’ve just been lucky?

There is nothing worse than cat urine when I am trashing out a house.  And, I have to go in BEFORE they clean or recarpet.  Whoa....I can always tell who smoked so they couldn't SMELL it.

if you get to the point of carpet removal, and the wood sub floor underneath is also stinky, after cleaning it coat the floor with shellac. It will seal the floor sufficiently to allow carpet installation.

I like the suggestion of ''sniffing it away''. I do have cats, but i do not want my nose any close to the nasty odor.

I have two cats and a dog. I noticed, they start acting up if they are not happy. if someone has this sudden issue, try Comfort Zone Feliway. Your cats will be happy. Check reviews.

p.s. I'm not affiliated in any way. It is just a great product.

Great post, Stanley! One of my 2 cats (both neutered males) had taken to painting all of my walls, furniture, and anything else he could reach. I was horrified when I got a UV light. He never did that in all of the 9 years I've had him and didn't when I got him a buddy (they love each other and did so right away) but when a strange black cat started showing up outside both of my cats went nuts and the older one (9) started his wall painting, as well as the curtains out in the kitty room. I couldn't keep up with it.

My cats are indoor cats so it's not like the stray is actually going to get in here but they both hate him (and he is weird...my neighbor's cats hate him too). I've tried cleaning with a pet urine enzyme and then spraying some "No More Spraying" but that hasn't worked.

He's a sneaky little bugger too; he waits until he thinks I'm not looking and then does it. He's learned that the minute I see him backing his butt up to something he gets yelled at. It wasn't until I found "Cat Spraying No More" that I was able to finally get rid of this tiresome behavior. Now my house doesn't smell like a litter box anymore :)

Here's a link the their site if you're interested in checking it out, I highly recommend this: NoMoreCatPee.com
