Carolina Blue Skies, Warps and Splinters

By

North Carolina Asheville Blue SkiesPerfect Carolina Blue sky today here in Asheville-mountain air clear and crisp as the warp and splinter of the world will allow. And this got me thinking about preserving and improving the quality of outdoor or ambient air.

As a land specialist, I think about things like that-about the troposphere and stratosphere, and how each affects the quality of life on Earth differently. I remember emphasizing this to my students when I was a schoolteacher (seems like a thousand years ago)....Maybe you remember learning that the troposphere begins at the Earth's surface and extends for 6-10 miles. It absolutely and directly affects the health of the people, animals, and plants living on the Earth.

The stratosphere, which extends to 30-34 miles above the Earth's surface, preserves the Earth's climate and protects the Earth from the sun's radiation. But we have a challenge. And it's mostly related to human beings.

The Warp and Splinter AKA Pollutants

Carolina blue skies or not, ozone  formed in the troposphereby chemical reactions between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOX) on sunny days, and that industrial facility down the road, and that coal-fired power plant over the hill.... emit VOCs and NOX. It's a challenge. Even, gas-powered yard tools, boats, cars we appreciate so much can be a problem.  If you look at it as an opportunity to turn on the valve to your creative juices, get inspired by the challenge to resolve the "warp and splinter"  it could be a good-thing.

As real estate professionals,we are invested in quality of life issues for our clients. When I think that various pollutants impact the quality of daily life by making it difficult to work or play out-of-doors, I get concerned, don't you?  Makes me want to do something about the situation.

SO I'm starting a list of tips specific to our real estate practice, and inviting you to add your suggestions.

1. Transportation Tips .

Many REALTORS® are on the road much of the time. How we drive and care for our cars is important.
So, I think it's a great idea just to plan ahead.  Organize our trips.
Oh yes! And I love my smooth energy-conserving grade of motor oil.
(Just look for the   EC grade on the container and be sure to use multigrade.)

If you are out on the road with investors as I so often am,
you can  increase your gas mileage by as much as 15 percent,
depending on your car, just by going 55 and driving at a steady speed.

I can't always "travel light"...not too long ago I had two dogs, three kids and their folks in my little Subaru,
but I know it would be more fuel efficient.

OK...your turn!!!

Good morning janeAnne,  this has been quite a debated topic this month...and fun.  :)  I agree that agents can make a difference and make a statement while they are working.

I have found that maintaining my car helps my gas mileage....like just keeping my tires aired up properly.

I also think that talking to our clients about it and letting them know of alternatives in their home can make a big difference.  I heard over the weekend on a talk show that if everyone had a solar hot water heater on their house, it would negate XXX amounts of local pollutants.  Sorry, I don't remember how much.  It was a local talk show.  Educating clients would benefit greatly.

JaneAnne - Thanks for the science lesson it was long ago that I studied that stuff so I am fuzzy.  As real estate agents there is a lot we can do to save energy and cut down on pollution.  Your tip of keeping a steady speed is certainly a good one.

Having a conservationist home inspector is great. He offers wonderful advise to the buyers from energy efficiency to gutter barrels.

Interesting that you should comment that real estate professionals "can make a difference and make a statement while they are working..." It surprises some of our investors when they hear of our great gas mileage....eyebrows go up, we hear whistles and "WOW!"  At this point we cover the 5,000 elevation steep slopes, so we chose our nimble Subaru...but if we were on level land, we could get super-impressive mileage with a quiet, fuel efficient hybrid...and make a atatement as per your comment.

2015: Solar Energy Is Still A Simple Machine!

Stephanie took mine! LOL! There was a great post the other day (I forget who, I'll have tot look) about gassing up in the morning when the temperatures are cooler. The warmer temperatures expand the gas so that you don't get as much gas! I liked that one!

Also, try to plan your trips when it is not rush hour traffic. Less sitting in traffic idling!

JaneAnne - thank you for the refresher course on the atmosphere! I do remember learning much of that at one time!

WOW...what a science lesson, I'm becoming a convert!  The Carolina blue sky's always get me...it sure is the prettiest month of the year, and hardly any energy being used for heating and air-conditioning.

Hi janeAnne - I love that picture!  You always have such really cool pictures on your posts.

I try to gas up in the morning, heard that on a documentary earlier this year.  All of our outdoor yard equipment is electric, with the exception of our lawnmower.  This year we bought a new mower that can be used with gas or electricity.  So that's almost all electric.

We use containers outside to collect the rainwater to water our plants with, when it rains.  It's been a little dry up here of late, but we collect it when we can.

We use our ceiling fans most of the time, trying to get away from the air conditioners.  Those usually are enough to cool the house down most of the time.

Thanks for the tips!
Ann

I did not realize that Gas tanks filled in the AM made a difference.

Are the leaves turning by you yet?

Really like your tips for clean air and especially, your tips seem pertinent to real estate professionals who are in our cars so much more than many other folks.

Gas up in the morning...collect rainwater...really good tips! I have hard that one way to collect water is to have a bucket in your shower and collect the water until it warms up...and-use it later for your organic vegetables...(if you live in a city and have chlorinated water, you would want to make sure the chlorine is out of the water before watering plants.)
