In a world dominated by media, words are becoming more powerful as a point of connection between people, businesses and entities. But at the same time our personal words are becoming benign . Just as one negative word(s) can do damage to a child's psyche, by contrast, a positive statement can do wonders for the spirit. Words exchanged between people should not be taken lightly.
Words are on my mind today, because recently there was a business event where people gave me their word that they would attend: 2 hours later they weren't seen nor heard from . There was a time in our history when someone's gift of "their word" was just as strong as a written contract.
If by chance you're one of those who have faltered on your word, why not just refrain from a verbal committment and just pleasantly surprise another party. I think one of the reasons people don't do this because there is the power in the moment of "giving your word". However, we neglect to realize the damage done to personal interaction when words are not kept. Power in the moment is wasted by the consequences in the future. Personal transactions are weakened because one's word means nothing.
I challenge you today to stop, think about what you're going to say and only to verbally commit to what you can do. In lieu of that: how about saying: "I'll see what I can do...", "I'll try and if I can't I'll give you a call...", etc. (of course don't take those words lightly...)
On a greater level, words build solid communities when our verbal interactions are based on trust. I challenge you today to take your words seriously, think about the tangible consequences of promises and begin a daily campaign to restore belief in the human word.
