Great post Craig! Twitter IS a great vehicle for getting business which is why I wrote the Home Stager's Guide to Twitter: Building your home staging business one 'tweet' at a time.
There are so many advanced strategies that can be used to find the right people to follow, and to help the right people find you. It is a great source for driving traffic to your website or blog. I have been using Twitter for more than 3 years.
Personally I love the 140 character limit to force people to be succinct. Lack of limit is one of the things I like less about Facebook.
NEW USER TIP: Don't set up an Auto DM (direct message) to thank people for following you. Auto DMs are really just sp@m and they make the DM function within Twitter virtually unusable for real communications (especially once you have thousands of followers). Advanced users will unfollow you for using Auto DMs.
EXISTING USER TIP: Check out how well you're doing on Twitter with this free service, TwitterGrader.com. You'll actually find out your performance "score" out of 100 and your rank. which is a reflection of your influence on Twitter. This is not a simple measure of number of followers -- followers who actually listen to you is more important than having thousands who don't -- it's about how ofen you get @replies and @retweets, and more.
I'm proud to say that @stagingdiva has a grade of 98.4% which I've maintained for 3 years now, despite the astronomical growth in the number of Twitter users over that time.
Craig, I believe there are a lot more Twitter members and you have many MORE followers sine the writing of this post.
Debra - This is great stuff you've shared with everyone here. Thank you for doing that. I've already forwarded your Home Stager's guide to one of my friends who can benefit from it. By the way, my grade was an 89. Not bad for someone who just recently got the hang of Twitter, but definitely room to improve.
Rebecca - I did pick up a few subscribers from this post and even more stalkers followers on Twitter.
Great post Craig! Thanks for the research, I am now using my Twitter account.
Mike - I'm happy to have helped. Thanks for stopping on by.
Mark - You've very welcome my friend. I am not professing to know it all, these are just my thoughts... for whatever they're worth. Apply at your own discretion!
I've been using Twitter for a while but haven't found much success with it. I don't know how to get more followers. Isn't it like sending your information out to a void if there's no one there to see it? If there's no one there connected to you to see what you send out? How do you get more followers? I keep hearing "put out good information and people will follow you" but that seems like it's counterproductive. If you put out good information and you only have 12 people following you, only those 12 people will see what you send out. Is that correct? So then, how do you get more people following you to see what you send out? And then, how do you get those people to cross over and connect with you on Facebook and Linked In and MySpace?
Emcee
Emcee - I'm no authority on the topic, but I've found that if you post items of value (local events, direct links to important local web sites, etc.) the followers will eventually come. When you do post them, if you use the # tag before your key words, people search for tweets with those tags in them. (ie: #Raleigh) By doing that, it turns, in my example, the word Raleigh into a link for all tweets that have Raleigh in them. And, if people do start following you on Twitter, then they'll eventually stop by your other sites to see what you're up to. Like all things though, it takes time to see the results.
Thanks Craig, glad I could contribute some tips to your already excellent post and that the Home Stager's Guide to Twitter can help your friend. Keep tweeting and congrats on that score!
Debra - Some folks get really offended when others post links in their blog comments, and I can understand why, but yours was well worth sharing. And the other info was great stuff for those who read this post to learn from. I truly thank you!
Been Tweeting for about two weeks, and have seen a definete improvement on my Google Analysics.
Nancy - Well there you go Nancy! Great stuff. Now check out the link Debra Gould provided in comment #163 and see your Twitter Ranking too.
Great sense of humor! I also enjoyed your graphics. The power of Twitter can not be denied.
Kathy - Thank you Kathy! No one ever told me that learning can't be fun! Thus the humor. Glad you enjoyed. And, I agree, the power of Twitter can not be denied!
Nice post Craig. I think I must have been on Twitter the day you broke it. :)
Thanks for sharing.
Carla - Yeah, that was me. Guilty as charged! So sorry!
Awwwww, we ALL get the "Fail Whale" at least 10 times a month, lol! I get great traffic to my blogs with Twitter, been using it for a couple years, it's awesome! You just have to be real good at squeezing a thought into 140 characters or less, lol!
Christine - I do like Twitter for the traffic it sends my way. But, you're so right. Compressing my thoughts into 140 characters is not easy for a guy who has way too much to say!
I'd like your opinion from 2013, are you still twitting? Do you still think it is good for your business?
I have a lot of followers there, but I'm not sure if I need to promote there my business.
Inna - Hi Inna. Yes, I do still tweet. And, yes, I do think it's good for business. Depending on what I tweet, I can see a spike in my web site traffic. It enhances my web presence, it's easy, and, best of all, it's FREE! Is it my only source of marketing? NO! But, it's just another avenue to spread the word on what I do.
