Moving Mom out of the family home can be tough.

I got a call from a long time friend yesterday. She wants me to come by and list her mother's home, a home her mom and dad have lived in for years. Dad passed away a little over a year ago and her mom is moving to an assisted living facility here in southwest Missouri. Her health is still good but her mind is slipping a bit.

When I stopped by, most of the furniture had been removed but there were boxes upon boxes of knick- knacks and figurines that had been acquired over the years as birthday and Christmas presents as well as from trips the mother had taken. Needless to say there's not enough room in the new home and the daughters don't want them.

The mother of course thinks there is great wealth in the stuff the girls are wanting to be rid of. As they pack, she pulls out. A life time of memories being packed to ship to????? They're not sure yet.

And of course it made me think of my own mother. I can't imagine her not being the rock she has always been for me. One of the hardest working women I've ever met, I dread the day when I must pack her stuff and decide what to keep and what to call the antique dealer about. Luckily she's still young enough that it's still a long way off, but life goes so fast that before I know it my own sons will be doing the same with me. I don't want to think about that either, but all I've got to say is they better not just throw away my shoe collection. Now that would really hurt.

Billi, funny how everyone has a collection of things they never want to get rid of! I think I have more than one, if you ask my husband...;)

Billi...that is a difficult thing to do.  I remember having to move my grandparents out of their home over 20 years ago. My Mother too has quiet a few years left but time passes so quickly, I won't be that far behind Mom.  Who knows...we might even share a room!

Fortunately, my mother is the farthest thing in the world from a packrat.  Her home is like a museum.  Maybe she learned what not to do after she had to pack up my grandma's things.  I've never heard Mom say more curse words than when she had to pull the 1,200 egg cartons down from Grandma's attic.  Why?  I guess we'll never know.  FYI:  we didn't keep the egg cartons.

Lina, a lot of older people used to use the egg cartons in the attic as insulation and your mom will probably outlive us both.

Billi, I can't believe I missed reading this very touching post the other day..... That is a very sad situation.  I don't even like to think about losing one of my parents.

This may sound weird, but as I was doing some spring cleaning the other day, I found myself wondering what my kids would do with some of the antiques/collectibles that I am most fond of.   Some people love antiques and memorabilia.  Others, such as my middle sister, don't keep anything that does fit her home's current design scheme.
