Charming Older Houses May Contain Asbestos Perhaps the ‘too good to be true’ price is a clue you don’t want to overlook. It could be hazardous to your health. There are hidden dangers in some houses that you could definitely miss when viewing the home. Asbestos is one of those potentially dangerous building material components that were commonly used prior to the last few decades.

It was a wonderful solution to the fire proofing of commercial and residential homes, but it has since been found to cause a number of diseases and some of them are terminal. Cancerous tumors, lung afflictions, and more can become a health hazard of asbestos after exposure to it. It is still used in many places throughout the world, but in controlled amounts and circumstances. Buying an older house that you want to remodel might not be as easy as you think if asbestos is present.

In most cases it can remain where it is and cause no harm. The danger is in knocking down a wall or replacing a window, where the asbestos dust is released into the air. An expert will be able to tell you whether or not your potential perfect house is deemed safe or if the asbestos will have to be removed by a hazardous materials crew, which is exorbitantly expensive and the only legal and safe way to remove it in many areas.

You can ask for a home inspector to visit the house before you buy. This is one way to find out not only why the house is priced so low, and whether you will move in and end up having to leave while asbestos is removed by experts in the disposal of the material. It’s generally a good idea to get an inspection on an older house before buying in any case, as there may be surprises that you couldn’t imagine.

In states where full disclosure is necessary to sell a house, this is not as much of a problem as it is in those places where the market is more open to the ‘buyer beware’ school of caution. The inspection may cost a little out of pocket, but it will be worthwhile knowing exactly what you are buying.
