The CANDiLAND codes are my own collection of code fragments - a resource containing generalized code and good ideas that you can use to enhance your blogs in ways you may not know how to (or may not want to bother ). Please be sure to always keep a backup copy of all your work prior to making changes if you opt to update older posts. No guarantees in my rookie skills.
Welcome to the first of my series of posts on Blogging in CANDiLAND! I hope you enjoy what you find and come back often. I have been asked by several readers of my blog on how I use my graphics and layouts for different posts that I have published. I will try to make this brief and explain a little about my hobby and interest of working with HTML and blogging techniques. My schooling on this is very limited, I have self taught myself from gathering research online and free websites, layouts and just simply intrigued with the art and design involved.
Originally I started tinkering with HTML because of a desire to create my own website and started looking for ideas online. Finding templates and discovering exactly what was behind a web page to make it look so good. At one point in time, my desire to was start a business that tailored around being a Virtual Office Online for professionals such as Agents/Brokers and Title companies. I needed a website and so I began finding the tools to make it work. I found that I enjoyed creating with HTML, since my love for colors and art runs deep in my blood. My father was an established artist who taught many art classes through out my lifetime. My mother was extremely talented and at one point in her life, owned a craft store that catered to dolls and tole painting (painting on wood). Both were very artistic and I was granted a portion of their genes. Now my children have it even deeper than I. Their paternal grandparents are both artist, their father is a great artist and very creative in his own right. My oldest son, Cory has an Bachelors in Art Degree and currently works for a company on the East Coast. Our love for art is pretty thick and we all have a different medium that we enjoy, mine just happens to be working with web pages.
I hope you find some fun things here and come back again. The only thing I ask is if you use something, please come back and share your creative ideas with us by linking it in the comments!! I would love to see what you have created. That is the rewarding part for me, other than I get to share my fun with you. Now, CANDiLAND might not be for everyone, this is for those that might find "trashing" (my slang) their blog fun. It might only be for a few but stick around you might find a tip or two that you might be able to use. If you have any ideas, questions or requests be sure to email me or comment and I will help you with what I can. Please know we are all beginners, I don't profess to be a programmer, I have learned from trial and error and we can have fun learning together.
I will be adding tips, ideas, blog tricks, text tips, widgets, gadgets and anything I can find that you might find of interest. Keep in mind that you can use these tips for any blog or webpage of your choice. The possibilities are endless. Have Fun, Be Creative! Happy Blogging! Won't your trash your blog with me?
NOTE: If there are programmer out there that wants to help, feel free. I am open to any suggestions. This original introduction is just that, you won't see this on every post. Being the first post of this series I wanted to give you a little background and welcome you to CANDiLAND.
Code Your Own Banner:
It's easy to make your own banner without any graphic tools. This is all text. No graphics. A fast loading banner that uses pure text. This one will stretch or shrink to fit in your space. You will need to pick up a spare picture for the background and you can find plenty at TinyPic.com. The size (width and height) doesn't matter.
Copy and paste in your Blog or Web page:

Candace (May I call you "Princess of CandiLand"), this is a very interesting post and I look forward to the rest of the series. I've bookmarked it for future reference to create my very own banner (unless you'd like to create one for me?). Thanks for the technical information.
| 10/01/2007 10:07 AM | by Brian Block -- Northern Virginia & D.C. Real Estate (RE/MAX Allegiance) |
Candace, You've been a great help to me with creating my simplified yellow banner that I use now on the bottom of my posts...thanks so much !!! I figured out how to make one using a 'Paint' program, however I prefer the one you provided the html code for.
I agree with Brad, you're the greatest !!!

Jo (ps. beautiful banners, btw)

Thanks Brad- I think our minds think alike!! This was a little bit of work, after I did the introduction the rest was fairly easy! Just remember you can skip the intro and jump down to the CODE TIPS. This will be the only one that has the added detail at the top to explain my first series of Tips. Let me if you need help and I hope you give it a try!! Candace Ps. You are always so good to me!! Thank you!

KABOOM!!! Wow Candace, tell us what's really on your mind! This is great stuff and we sure hope to free up alittle time in the next couple of days to play in Candiland! Thanks for all this good stuff you've so unselfishly shared with us!

Brian B. - Absolutely I will be happy to help where I can!! I am glad you found enough interest to bookmark. I hope to see what you come up with, be sure to send me a link or leave it here in the comments so we can all enjoy your work. Try something I hope. The great part is that this banner is ALL text and no pictures so the spiders will find the text so use your words wisely when you can. Email me if you need help, I am here.
| 10/01/2007 12:20 PM | by Gilbert Arizona Real Estate - Candace Robinson (HomeSmart ) |
Hey Candace - I gave you a "5" and I also bookmarked this post, even though you didn't include an "Austin Texas Real Estate" banner above. :) Hope you are having a great Monday!
| 10/01/2007 12:23 PM | by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (Austin Texas Homes, LLC) |
Lisa -- Kinda corny for the CANDiLAND name, however it seemed to tie in some what. I am stilled called 'Candi' by family and friends. Blogging be a playground and Real Estate being my game...thus 'CANDiLAND'... Hope you get a chance to free up some time with to try a banner out. I would love to see what you do! I know you have a lot on you plate right now, I pray things change real quick for you-- God Bless. Thank you for the terrific words...you are so fun. Candi

Hi Jo- I am glad your banner worked out. I am going there next to check out your banner. Did you change up the color on some posts? Be sure to see the color chart link here in this post so you can adjust the color if you want or need too! Glad you made it by, hope you share a creative use of a banner somewhere. Hey, can't beat a text graphic!! Thank you as always for your gracious compliments!! Candace
| 10/01/2007 12:30 PM | by Gilbert Arizona Real Estate - Candace Robinson (HomeSmart ) |
Jason - Oh now, you didn't think I would let you get off that easy did ya? I know you can do this and I really hope you take a second look to put one up on a page sometime. It's very easy, skip past all the first introduction of this series and pull a graphic you already have to do a quick banner.
Good searches for Tinypic.com are:
Show me something and in the meantime if you would like a Austin Texas Real Estate, I will trade you one!! I just need your pictures of choice. Take some of your listings elevations, now that would be cool!!
Thank you for the rating!! Let me know if you have something in HTML you want to see..I will see what I can do!! CAN DO (word of the day)!!
| 10/01/2007 12:35 PM | by Gilbert Arizona Real Estate - Candace Robinson (HomeSmart ) |
Great post Candi...
You do have to watch out for copyrights displaying pictures or graphics, Many sites offer free pictures while others make you pay for them. Everyone should make sure that they use each copy with full permission to do so or they could be liable for copyright infringements.
Again, great post and look forward to seeing more to come........
| 10/01/2007 12:43 PM | by Roy Bosworth (Century 21 Valley Properties) |
Hi Candace,
I changed the colour from gold (I found it too dark) to a goldenrod yellow...I might change it again to something else. It's fun playing around with it....
I wonder why the font in your comments here are so tiny....or maybe it's just my perception?
I kind of like the text graphic banner more than the picture banner for inserting under a blog post. If it were for the top of a website, that would be different, then I think it would be better to go with the picture banner ...although now that I've just looked at your AR banner at the bottom of your post, hmmm...maybe I've just changed my mind and need to go back to the drawing board?
Jo
| 10/01/2007 01:05 PM | by Jo-Anne Smith-Belleville, Quinte and Prince Edward Region Real Estate, Ont. (Royal Lepage Proalliance Realty, Brokerage) |
Roy - I agree- as always be aware of copyright laws when using photos. A couple of places that you can buy photos for less are www.istockphotos.com and www.webshots.com Tinypics has a large amount of photos available that are hosted there and being that this banner is projected into the html as an URL. Check out Tinypic.com
Ideal would be to take your own photos if time allows and makes it's more personal. Hopefully we are so busy that we need to buy them, that only means we are taking care of business!!
| 10/01/2007 01:17 PM | by Gilbert Arizona Real Estate - Candace Robinson (HomeSmart ) |
Candace, I don't currently have enough time to give this post the attention it commands, so I'll have to delve fully into later. All I can say at first glance though is "wow!" This is some amazing stuff, and I can't wait to play with some graphics. Thank you for lending your powerful tech know-how to us simpletons.
| 10/01/2007 01:57 PM | by Paul Slaybaugh, Scottsdale AZ Real Estate (Realty Executives) |
Hi, Candace! I bookmarked this for tonight. Cool graphics and thank you so much for sharing them. Would this work in any website, too?
| 10/01/2007 02:06 PM | by Yolanda Hoversten - Metro East IL Real Estate (Prudential One Realty Centre) |
Oh Jo --- hahaha!! I thought it was my eyes that are being burnt from viewing my screen for so many hours at a time. But going back to my html I realized I did not put a closing tag </small> after my very last set of words on my post, not doing so carried the small text into the comments. Thanks for bring it to my attention...it's not your view. It was my oversight.
<small>Copyright 2007 - Candace Robinson - Real Estate Blogging | Arizona REALTOR -Candiland</small>
Glad you are using your banner-- Have fun with the colors. I would consider that a footer banner. Does that text come up on your google search by placing it at the bottom of your page being it's within the table? It should.
| 10/01/2007 02:09 PM | by Gilbert Arizona Real Estate - Candace Robinson (HomeSmart ) |
Paul- I am excited to see what you do with the banners!! I think it would be great to try a property banner! Take one of your luxury homes in Scottsdale and make a beautiful banner!! I can help you if you need some artwork done!! What a great presentation for showcasing a home right? Also your sellers will be impressed and it's super simple!! The domain websites are a big hit right now, this would be a quick header and footer bannner!! Lets see if we can't make you one!! You will be surprised to see how easy it is!
| 10/01/2007 02:13 PM | by Gilbert Arizona Real Estate - Candace Robinson (HomeSmart ) |
Yolanda - Glad you bookmarked this, this little ditty is pretty simple, I say try it once and you will be hooked. Once you create the banner and get comfortable, you should be able to place this in any web page or blog!! You will need to make sure you put it between the <body> insert HTML HERE </body> tags. If you want to get more specific on placement then you probably need to work with tables or code it to be a header or footer. Give it a shot and be sure to let me know if you need help, here for you!!
| 10/01/2007 02:17 PM | by Gilbert Arizona Real Estate - Candace Robinson (HomeSmart ) |
Candace, You make it look and sound SO easy! I've bookmarked this to come back and try it later but I haven't been yet able to do the simpliest of things on websites---yet. Maybe this is a new beginning :) Thank you for what I can tell will be a wonderful series!

| 10/02/2007 11:31 AM | by Shannon Lefevre Naples, Florida CRS (John R. Wood REALTORS Inc.) |
Shannon- "I AM SO EXCITED YOU STOPPED BY" ..<screaming too> I hope you take a minute and stop by Tinypic.com and search for stripes, there are so many cute ideas that would fit your theme and I don't think you would have any issues with copyrights with such graphics. PLEASE PLEASE BE SURE TO SEND A LINK BACK OF YOUR WORK SO WE CAN SEE YOUR WONDERFUL TALENT!! I love your blogs and your Gorgeous pictures, so try an open header with a banner with your beautiful houses, pink motifs, etc. The 'possibilites are endless'.... (you gave me goosebumps when i read your comment) LOL.... Have fun!! Thank you!!
PS... The greatest thing here too about this useful banner is IT IS NOT A PICTURE/GRAPHIC banner which wouldn't get picked up by search engines as a graphic banner on a page... the WORDS/TEXT in the banner are text and can be read by spiders... ie; Spectacular Naples Property For Sale

Tracy - I can help you if you need help with this banner! If you delete any part of the code, it will not work at all. Yes, I can also help you with some form of the scrolling banner. Not flash, but a scrolling banner with text. Email me. Click on Ralph Roberts in my tags and see if that is what you are looking for.

Hi Candace, I went step by step just as you spelled it out and I did it! The hardest thing was figuring out that I could save my work without actually posting to any groups DUH! I kept looking for a save draft button.

Lori - Did you find the 'draft button' ?? So glad members are using this tutorial still.
| 03/30/2008 05:09 PM | by Gilbert Arizona Real Estate - Candace Robinson (HomeSmart ) |
Hi Candace, No I did not find a draft button!! Where is it!? How I was accomplishing what I did was hitting the submit button without checking any groups. I noticed it showed up on MY BLOG but I just deleted it since it was a test. Also I found your blog by doing a search on HTML. There you were! I noticed you titled this one "Part 1" Did you post any more?
| 03/30/2008 08:57 PM | by Lori Franks ~ Brookings, Oregon Real Estate (Coldwell Banker~ Oregon Coast Realty) |
Lori,
There is a draft button on the post in the editor mode, it's where you select, draft, member's only, public etc. However, I don't think it will show your finished product until it get's published live. However, Katerina Gasset has posted using NVU which is a HTML software that requires download I believe and helps you build HTML posts and converts it for you. I use Frontpage by Microsoft and Dreamweaver for most of my posts with HTML.
I have several other posts that are tutorial and have been out of the loop as of late. I will be reposting soon about other cool HTML ideas and back on track soon. I had some business that was keeping me away from the Rain, unfortunately. Can you send me a link to your banner you did? I would love to see it!!
Do a search on my page or tags for, "candiland," and tutorials...give that a shot and see what comes up.
| 03/31/2008 10:30 AM | by Gilbert Arizona Real Estate - Candace Robinson (HomeSmart ) |
Candace...you sweet thing! Thanks for spelling out the drop down box with the members only, public ect. there was draft!!
I deleted the banner I did but I have a new post in mind and will implement a banner in it and will send you a link to it! Probably end of the week.
Thanks again!

Lori - 'sweet thang' has been a nickname...LOL. Well, come to think of it when you have a name like Candace, I have had several.. Candi, Candy Cane, Gilbert (weird I know), Can Dance and Candiland, Suga and Dulce (spanish)... I answer to anything, especially when dinner is on!! Have a great week. PS...isn't Lori Frank a famous name with stationary?
| 04/01/2008 02:44 PM | by Gilbert Arizona Real Estate - Candace Robinson (HomeSmart ) |
Candace.... where did Gilbert come from? Maybe I don't want to know! I don't have any nic-names but you should check out my post titled " You can call me a Hussie!" I might have some sweet nic names after next weekend! And the stationary girl is Lisa Frank and my last name is Franks...multiple hotdogs....hehe. Lori - ahhhh yes Lisa Frank, now it has come to me! Cute stuff however! Cool name too, very catchy! My nickname, "Gilbert" was given to me by no other than TLW here on AR. She and many others have read my 'city' as my first name on my signature here when I post a comment and so often times I will have "Gilbert" used to address me. So many have done it that I gave up trying to change it...so.. Candace aka Gilbert as I am known here by some! I will have to check out your post for sure, Hussie huh? Sounds interesting...

Candace,
I inserted a hyper-link above to my post....I am learning so much cool stuff here in The Rain. I bet it is just a bit frustrating to some of you pros out there though when us newbies are just learning! So if you haven't already spent too much time searching it out... there is a neat link now. By the way we had full dress rehearsal last night what a hoot! in my full hussiness! I will probably update the post with a few pics tomorrow!
