Facebook Groups - Conversations With Select People

I know you are on Facebook. That's a given. Would you post different types of things if you knew it wasn't going to go out to ALL of your 150 friends (that is if you are a typical candidate of Dunbar's Number). Quite likely you may have "friended" quite a few more that that!

Facebook though is a great way to have dynamic and real time conversations on various topics. The question is how is the best way to limit those who can take part in the conversation?? The answer is in using the ability to create a group in Facebook and then invite just the people that you want to be in on the topic in question. Once you have a group, you can post conversations and replies on the group's wall and then only those in the group will see it. Here's a little video by Facebook that talks about groups and how they work.

Any ideas how you might use this?? Any of you in the masterminds challenges? :)

I took a recent Social Fusion class (excellent, BTW) and there was a lot of talk about using groups. I am just starting to set them up (obviously easier to do when you have a small number of friends). It makes lots of sense. Now to find the time to do it all.

Thanks for the great information, as always.

Jeff

I'm in a Facebook Co-Op group to help each other with social media stuff that I love. I want to put all my friends in categories though so that some comments will only go to some, etc. Just haven't had the time to do all that.

Thanks for the video link, I was just thinking about a small group (local) that would be useful to be in contact with. Boom! There is an answer.

This is definitely one of Facebook's best features... I have several groups setup. We used one for the planning committee for the last RE Barcamp and we have a couple of groups for work at The Talon Group for different projects...

Craig, I'm in one right now that all of a sudden I can't see any posts at all. When I post something, people in there can read it, but I can't see it at all. Any idea?

hi EVERYBODY - AR was OFF system error unavailable for me all DAY! - yikes, time to catch up!

Jeff - thanks for visit - groups do sound interesting potential

Larry - if there is a central topic of spurring conversation it will be good

Cindy - glad to hear - you know it now and can find ways to try it

Barbara - maybe put it to use in your new web design team project

Lynn - good to know FB options to pick the ones that you can leverage

Shar - yes that can work too

Marc - when you put a little thought into what we do... yes

Tom - small groups focus on a particular topic - yes, this is cool!

Rene - does it remind you of what google wave could have been if it survived, great idea that working in the cloud and NOT in email form can give to us!

Eric - I read that you may want to try compatibility mode (IE has this feature button next to the address bar)  - also try firefox or chrome just as comparison to see if same symptom... hth

I'm in a couple of groups right now, and I get a lot more posting action from those groups than my friends I used to have interaction with..I have a feeling they interact in groups more than their own profile.

While I miss talking to them, it also forces me to get more social with people I haven't talked to yet or haven't talked to in a long time, so it's all good!

And, it's a good reason to spend more time on Twitter.

Thank you for the information Craig.  I have not yet really used Facebook to my advantage, so many things to figure out with all that is out there and sometimes so little time.  I will be watching.

Thanks for this info Craig. One of the reasons I have hesitated so long about using facebook for business is precisely what this "groups" option addresses. I don't want to bother a lot of people with my businessy stuff.

I have an open group that another member added oodles of people to.  It's not working.  I've been toying with making it private and exclusive.  This just gave me the imputis to do so.  Thanks.

I am on one real estate group that is great, and some others that nobody really uses. LinkedIn has groups as well and some of them are pretty active. It's a great way to break down my friends and connections into manageable sizes!
