I received a call from a past client. She lost her job and decided to get into real estate. She took the licensing courses and passed the exam.

She needed advice about what she should do next.Should she join a large firm or a small firm and wanted to know how she could get buyers.

I adviced her to talk to several Brokers and see what kind of training they offer.

As for getting buyers I suggested she make a list of her sphere of influence and call all of them and tell them about her new profession. I said she could send them a letter and business card as soon as she joins a real estate office. I mentioned Active Rain and told her of all the things she can learn on Active Rain.

Sounds like you gave her some sound advice.  I hope she has some reserves for the wait til the closings come.

That's good advice and I am sure she appreciates having a friend/mentor in the business!

Good for you! I wish someone had directed me when I started. I was blessed with an awesome Broker who helped me to be successful from day one. I've tried to help a few new agents but most of them have moved on to "real jobs". :)

I think you made some great suggestions.. .especially calling her sphere once she selects a firm.  The Buffini course is a good idea if she has the funds.

Hello Gita,

Yes, you gave her good advice.

Large corporate offices out here put new agents through a 5-day training class and then set them out on their own. Personally I think that's a mistake.

I have had the opportunity to train many new agents, close to 200 over a long period of time. I think building a newbie's confidence by working closely with them works best, but isn't very common.  A newbie needs to be guided through their first few transactions with a broker or manager working like their partner.

Continuing free education is also important to stay current.

Jeanne, That is the most important thing she should consider.

Shannon, new agents should have a mentor hopefully in their office.

Arleen, Thank you.

Jim, Many new agents had to look for jobs with benefits in this  uncertain market

Lloyd, I had a great Broker who attended settlements when I started out at Century 21.

Great advice Gita. There is so much to learn and do as a new Real Estate Agent. She's lucky to have been able to speak with you.

Gita,

You gave her some good advice.  I would add another point to help her: find a niche that would suit her.  This way she can also network.

Gita,  I just hope your friend didn't get into real estate because it seemed like an easy option!  The good news is that if she can get her feet wet in this market and do well, she will do gang busters when the next cycle begins!!

All the best to your friend.

Gita, Great advice, but did you also tell her that there may be a long long wait before her first closing check arrives. This is a wonderful, but tough business so the right training is a must. Nice that you were able to help.

Gita, your advice is sound.  I got into Real Estate after 28 years doing marketing for corporations and philanthropies.  I was pulled in by an old friend who fed me some bs about how he and I could rule with my skills. As it turned out he wanted me to do all the work while he shared 50% of my efforts.  Had I spoken to a number of agents and brokers I would have realized my former friend was just another bad agent trying to take advantage.

The only other suggestion I would have is to go to as many meetings, gatherings, and broker open houses and just listen to people. That has helped me getting a firmer footing on what is going on in my areas.

Linda, I agree new agents can use all the help we can give them.

Bridget, I think she got in because she could not get a job any where else.

Larry and Sheila, I mentioned something but did not want to discourage her.

Larry, Thar is good advice. I used to go to all the Broker's open to get to know the area.
