Mom and Dad

Tonight my elderly mother called me from Tyler, Texas....I live in Boulder, Colorado.  Mom moved to Tyler about 18 months ago to be located closer to one of her Children.

(Photo is of my Mom and Dad on their 50th wedding anniversary)

When my father passed away in January of 2008, Mom was suddenly all alone.  The lonliness was overwhelming for her and she struggled making a decision to either move closer to one of her children or stay in a location where she had lived practically her entire life.  The decision to move to Tyler was difficult  and one she gave considerable thought and time to make.

She gave the move a good try, but never really aclimated to the new location and longed for her "home" back in Colorado (a location which is still 300 miles from my location in Colorado where she  no longer has a support system......I live in an urban area and she prefers a smaller, more rural location).

Despite the lack of a support system, and nearby relatives to help; she decided to sell her Tyler home and move back "home" to Colorado....  She put her house on the market and last week, received and offer and is now under contract.

The inspection took place a couple of days ago and today at 4:00 p.m. her agent delivered the "notice to correct" with a list of 6 items.  She called me in a panic and wanted to know if she was required to fix all of the items.  We discussed her options.   Her deadline to respond is Monday the 4th.  Keep in mind the notice was delivered at 4:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon, and the items on the list involved, plumbing, electrical, roofing and misc. issues.  Without knowing the cost of the requested repairs, she was ill-equiped to make decisions.

Mom doesn't have Internet service, nor does she have a computer, so I offered to make a few calls and see if I could at least get a roofing contractor to come out over the weekend to do an estimate.

RooferI quickly googled Roofing Contractors in Tyler and called Cable's Roofing & Construction.  I called and surprisingly even though it was already after 5:00 in Tyler, Darren Cable answered the phone.  I explained the situation and shared my frustration for being so far away and feeling less than adequate to help my Mom.  Darren's calming personality and professionalism immediately won me over.  I asked for credentials, and gave him my mother's address, and phone number. He told me he would try to get out to her home before dark, otherwise it would be the next morning.  He map quested her address and discovered she lived only 2.7 miles from his shop and said he would go right away to her home.  Darren also promised to send me pictures of the damaged areas on her roof and his written estimate.

I called Mom back........she was thrilled.  I gave her his name, phone number and a description of his truck so she would not be alarmed when he pulled into her driveway.  True to his word, he and one of his associates went directly to my mom's home.  They were curteous, professionl, respectful and thorough.

My mother shared the other items on her notice to correct with Daren and he was was able to fix one of the other items for a nominal fee and a third item on her list for FREE.

She called me excited as soon as he left.  She was so grateful, and relieved that he could address the big items on her list and complete the work by Monday!  While I was still speaking to my Mom.....you guessed it.....Darren called as promised with his quotes.  He told me when he advised my mom he would send all the information to me first to see if I was okay with the charges, she begged him to go ahead and schedule them for Monday; he wanted to know if that was okay.....

Next, he told me that Mom had given him her agent's business card and....after writing up the bills, he would email me and my mom's agent along with the pictures of the work he was completing, and print up hard copies (including pictures) for my mom.

Darren is my Hero tonight for helping my mom.... He is my Hero tonight for answering his business line after closing time on a Friday night, and making a service call for a "free estimate" also on a Friday evening.  He is my Hero for being the ultimate professional, being fairly priced and providing excellent customer service.  He is my Hero tonight for putting my mind at ease and more importantly for putting my Mom's mind at ease.

Thank you, Darren, You are my Hero!  And when (if) you decide to relocate your business to Colorado; I will be your biggest fan and your largest referral resource!
