OLGA KERN

Olga Kern is a 36-year old Russian born pianist whose family tree traces back to Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff, which may have a lot to do with explaining who she is and why.

Ms. Kern won the 2001 Van Clibutn Competition and since then has soloed with major symphonies all over the world. She's won major awards and secured outstanding reviews, one after another, along the way.

I have studied classical music performance since childhood, so that counts back at least 60 years.  And, although I've never been a classical pianist, I've been a competent jazz pianist for almost 40.  My point is, that I have more than a passing interest and understanding of piano performance.

My wife, Patty, is an excellent classical pianist and harpist.

Late last week, one of the Dallas Symphony's harpist, our friend Naoko Stromberg, gave us two tickets for Saturday evening's concert.  Japp van Zweden would lead the symphony in its performance of  Tchaikovsky's Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor and his Manfred Symphony, Opus 58.

The piano soloist for Concerto No. 1 would be Miss Kern, and she would play this very complicated, complex piece for its 33 minute duration.

After intermission, the symphony would perform Manfred Symphony without Ms. Kern.

Patty and I are both convinced that Miss Kern may be the most important classical pianist performing today.  Her CDs are available through amazon.com and other outlets.  Add them to your collection, meanwhile, be sure to see her perform in person the first chance you get.
