Real Estate TVWhen I was a kid, nothing was better than waiting for the Fall to come.  Once school had Man from UNCLErestarted, there were loads of great new TV shows that would come on!  For ever night of the week we'd have the TV guide out and see what new show was on that particular evening.  SOme shows were great, and others well just dissappointing.  The dissappointing ones never seemed to make it  to the next seasons!  Great TV shows would always be around!  Wll almost!  My favorite show was Man From Uncle!  I guess that lost some interest over time! Over the years, TV changed, and shows left the entertainmanet business and passed themselves off as psuedo learning tools.   They really were neither.  They gave just information to be dangerous!  Sort of like going to a real estate seminar.  To learn the real tricks and tips, you will need to buy my tapes and books!

Well, for the last few years on HGTV we've entertained and supposedly learned form a lot of TV shows that filled our insatiable anorexic needs for why we should buy real estate.  We weree all like anorexic phiranias, and there was not enough information that we could amass!  It was never enough!  Even though I never really got into the reality real estate shows, Ti me they made no sense, and never addressed real issues of profit, commission and taxes.  I would bet money that their popularity is waining right now.  Home sellers with staged homes sitting on the market with cheap makeovers are starting to get annoyed at the reruns of successful sales of rso really dreadful looking homes!  They've not quite learned the art of learning how to stage their homes with paints, and half ass cheap repairs that look like it was done by a do-it-yourselfer on a Wal-Mart gift card budget!  Up close those do-it-your-self projects always look like you did it yourself anyway!  The new waves of reality real estate TV shows should address the new realities in a variety of new shows.  We are long overdue for some new entertainment, and waiting impatiently!  Here are a few new reality TV shows I'd like to see:

  • Flip this!
  • CSI Mortgage Fraud
  • Designed to Sell - Well Almost
  • Flipping Intervention for Investors
  • Marrooned in a home I can't sell!
  • Survivor Real Estate Version
  • Buy Me...Now!
  • Design Wannabees
  • This SOLD House
  • Loan Hunting Trying to Find Financing
  • What's with All the Houses?
  • Simply Quit
  • In Over Our Heads

How about  Desperate Homesellers  or  Design without a Dime?

10/01/2007 11:01 PM by Ricki Eichler, your Texas Hill Country connection (Hill Country Estate Properties)

Ricki Eichler  I love that!  "Desperate Homesellers "  I guess if they can buy wihtout a dime, then Designing without a Dime is good also!

10/01/2007 11:04 PM by Jim Crawford ~ Atlanta Real Estate-ABR E-PRO (RE/MAX Greater Atlanta)

How about... "I want to buy a house, but my credit sucks. Can you help me?"

10/01/2007 11:23 PM by West Hartford CT Real Estate Agent | West Hartford Realtor | Michael Chenkus (ERA Broder Group)

An Update:

Fix-'em-up shows get makeover  I just came across this article quite by accident this evening.  Basically, it is what I shared...."Slump in U.S. housing is leading networks `to rethink TV content"

One last request for a reality show:

Amateur real estate experts to get your advice from.

There could be a panel made up of neighbors and relatives that are everything from car salesman to garbage collectors.  they would give their opinions on things such as how much their real estate agent should list their home.  They could also advise their buyer friends on how to buy a home and have sellers pay them for the privilege.

I thought a reality show on the activerain drama. Stick the top bloggers in a house for a week and watch what happens. Just kidding.

10/02/2007 05:53 AM by Missy Caulk Ann Arbor Real Estate (Keller Williams Ann Arbor)

Those all sound a lot more interesting than the line up they have these days on TV.  How about "Real Estate Rookie"?

10/02/2007 07:27 AM by Brigita McKelvie - Lehigh Valley, PA, Residential, Rural & Horse Properties (Vision Realty Group)

Jim:

Great Ideas.  I would like to see a show called "House" (like the doctor show) where the Realtor tells it like it is and solves the issues by thinking, planning and relying on systems to diagnose why the home hasn't sold instead of just trying to pull a rabbit out of a hat.

10/02/2007 07:47 AM by Jessica Horton (Brio Realty)

Randy L. Prothero I like the concept... "Amateur real estate experts to get your advice from."  Maybe we could work in a theme of trading places or something?

Missy Caulk  That meay be too real...you're starting to scare me!  LOL!

CHARLES McDONALD "In over over our heads"  Could be a winner!

Brigita McKelvie   "Real Estate Rookie"  Could it be like "Nanny?"

Jessica Horton   "House"   I am warming up to this concept!  "...thinking, planning and relying on systems to diagnose why the home hasn't sold instead of just trying to pull a rabbit out of a hat."

That sounds like a great plan, but it will never work on Reality TV, because you can't make it unrealistic which is the essence of Reality TV.  The term, in my opinion, is an oxymoron, Karen

10/02/2007 08:44 AM by Karen Kruschka - Fairfax Prince William Stafford County VA Real Estate Service (RE/MAX Allegiance)

Karen Kruschka    I fear you may be right!  I do not think we can dumb it down enough!

I enjoyed reading this post...all of these are definitely ready for TV!  Thanks for the humor!  I really like "Amateur real estate experts to get your advice from!"

10/02/2007 09:29 AM by Joyce Mahaney Brewster (High Profile Realty)

Joyce Mahaney Brewster  I think that is my favorite too!  "Amateur real estate experts to get your advice from!"

10/02/2007 09:30 AM by Jim Crawford ~ Atlanta Real Estate-ABR E-PRO (RE/MAX Greater Atlanta)

Phylena Houde   It was interesting after that guy from Atlanta who was on that show had already had his real estate license revoked...and we all came to learn they never did sell that home!  What was up with that?  Not a whole bunch of reality there!  That reality show should be OZ!  LOL!

10/02/2007 02:24 PM by Jim Crawford ~ Atlanta Real Estate-ABR E-PRO (RE/MAX Greater Atlanta)

Jim - This is funny and I like some of the other Titles. Missys idea may bring on the survival of the fittest Bloggers.

Here's one:  How to Make One Million Dollars in Real Estate... Start with Two Million!

10/03/2007 11:53 AM by David Slavin, ABR, SRES RE/MAX Grand, Katy, TX (RE/MAX Grand)

Realtor Swap - Take only highly successful agent and one that shouldn't even be in the business and make them swap listings and clients.  I can just see it now:  The client that had the good agent will be begging to have him/her back and the one that had the awful one will refuse to let him/her go.  Could be very interesting watching this show.

10/03/2007 12:15 PM by Jessica Horton (Brio Realty)

REO Agent-  Travel with us and experience the "dirty" side of RE.  Experince the glamour of doing a BPO, property checks, finding squatters, getting chased, and who knows what else.  See the agent shake off fleas, take their photos, and do the paperwork, and more paperwork.

Get it Closed-  Watch how much an actual agent works to keep a deal together.  Experience the last min. issues that pop up and settled with out the client really experiencing the stress.  At the end the clients watch a videa and actually see what goes on behind the scenes of Real Estate.

10/03/2007 01:08 PM by Chad Baird (Re/Max Spirit)

David Slavin   I like that one the best!  Verry funny!

Jessica Horton Realtor Swap!!!  Wow!  The battle between the cans. and can'ts!  agent and one that shouldn't even be in the business and make them swap listings and clients.  "I can just see it now:  The client that had the good agent will be begging to have him/her back and the one that had the awful one will refuse to let him/her go." Very interesting indeed!

Chad Baird  REO Agent I like the sound of this!  Sounds like an old western "Have agent will travel!"  Get it Closed  will work real well too!  What about Bounty hunter, or Worlds most dangerous listings?

10/03/2007 02:30 PM by Jim Crawford ~ Atlanta Real Estate-ABR E-PRO (RE/MAX Greater Atlanta)

Very funny...too bad so much of it could be real! LOL

10/04/2007 04:22 PM by Dawn DeGroff (Fredericksburg Realty, Inc)

Dawn DeGroff That is the sad part about it all!  Emergency home sales. Rescue sellers!

10/04/2007 08:40 PM by Jim Crawford ~ Atlanta Real Estate-ABR E-PRO (RE/MAX Greater Atlanta)

These are fabulous ideas!! The cable networks should read this blog post.

I've been wanting to do a show on Buyer Makeover--take a highly motivated but unqualified buyer (millions of candidates out there now!) and put them on a 6-month road to homeownership.

10/06/2007 12:30 PM by Shari Posey (Prudential California Realty)

I like Missy's idea.  We can call it "Real Rain."

10/06/2007 02:26 PM by Virginia Halter Broker, ABR, CRS (RE/MAX Signature Properties)

How about the realities of getting into the business: one episode could talk about the education you need vs what you get, another about how much savings you need to start this business venture...

What No One Ever Told Me

Could work for many professions really LOL

10/06/2007 03:03 PM by Sarah Nopp, REALTOR(R), CRS. RE/MAX Four Seasons, Olympia WA (RE/MAX Four Seasons)

Shari Posey  I love that idea!  "Buyer Makeover--take a highly motivated but unqualified buyer (millions of candidates out there now!) and put them on a 6-month road to homeownership."

Virginia Halter Broker, ABR, CRS  "Real Rain."   could be a great advice show!

Sarah Nopp, Investment Specialist  I love those ideas!  For years I thought about writing a book about real estate for the total newbie!  "So You Want to Sell Real Estate?"

10/06/2007 06:04 PM by Jim Crawford ~ Atlanta Real Estate-ABR E-PRO (RE/MAX Greater Atlanta)

How about America's Funniest Home Sellers  It would of course be a comedy show with a theme of what sellers actually thought their home was worth and why they deserved the money, what condition it was actually in and how they believe it is the best home in the neighborhood, what their agent told them to win the listing, and what kind of a discount or rebate they thought they deserved?  This could also work with buyer, thus extending the season and episodes. Oops, edit: the winner would get a discount or rebate.

10/06/2007 08:22 PM by Mary Strang, Viroqua, WI Real Estate (RE/MAX Hill Country)

Mary Strang, WI Real Estate  LOL!  Love it!  We could do back to back..."America's Funniest Home Sellers" and "America's Funniest Home Buyers!"

10/06/2007 08:27 PM by Jim Crawford ~ Atlanta Real Estate-ABR E-PRO (RE/MAX Greater Atlanta)

Of course you could also add a season special from time to time of: America's funniest Discounter with that theme being about how much help they would acutally not provide and what part of full service is not included.

10/06/2007 08:33 PM by Mary Strang, Viroqua, WI Real Estate (RE/MAX Hill Country)

Mary that would be a hoot! Also  "Lives of the not so rich anymore and not so famous!"
