I have a customer who is moving here from out of state that asked me today what a Homestead Exemption was, and how she could qualify for one. Here is a brief overview of what I shared and thought others might like to know...
What is a Residential Homestead Exemption?
A residential exemption removes part of the value of your property from taxation and lowers your taxes.
What are the qualifications?
•-You must own the property on January 1
•-The property must be your primary residence on January 1
•-You may not have claimed a residence homestead exemption on any other property
Please contact the appropriate appraisal district to notify taxing authorities of a change in ownership. We have provided the websites for you below.
They can also provide you with; more information on the Homestead Exemption, as well as other exemptions for which you may qualify and the application to take advantage of these tax savings, to be returned between January 1st and April 30th.
