HAPPY NATIONAL TARTAN DAY!
APRIL 6, 2011

The things you learn by being on Twitter...Who Knew?!?! Apparently, in 1998, our US Senate declared April 6th as 'National Tartan Day'!
This day was designated, and I quote: "in recognition of the monumental achievements and invaluable contributions made by Scottish Americans."

There is a Tartan Day luncheon celebration here in Pinehurst today, located at The Country Club of NC.  Tickets are $25 and it starts at 11:30am. Contact Shusa@embarmail.com for more information.

The Scottish Heritage is alive and well all over North Carolina,
especially in the two different areas that I call 'Home'...
Pinehurst, NC and Linville Falls, NC.
I try to attend the Highland Games at Grandfather Mountain, NC every year!
I LOVE the games & the music (and the beer, too)!
Well, they don't sell beer at the Games, but you're allowed to bring your own.

So, in honor of 'National Tartan Day'
here is a photo that I took at the
2010 Grandfather Mountain Highland Games.

I also thought Basil should make an apperance dressed in his Tartan, too!

Denise, Basil is so cute and proud in his plaid.  My dad was half scottish and played the bag pipes.  What a sound.  It sure took a lot of wind to blow those bad boys up.

I live in a neighborhood with a Scottish theme.  Our sub-association is called Tartan Hills Village.  This holiday is something we should put on our community calendar and have a fun celebration for.

Hi Denise, last year we drove to the bottom of Grandfather Mountain in hopes to attend the Highland games.  My mother has been studying geneology for 50 years and wanted to visit with the many clans.  We ended up turning around and leaving.  I was concerned that the terrain would be really difficult for my mother.  Now you can tell me if she could get around with a walker?  Great pictures!

Hi Judith - If you could somehow get a pass to drive up to the 'Field' I think she would be OK.  We always take the shuttle bus from the local high school.  The ride up is very bumpy and curvy!  Then it's a pretty good walk to the 'Field' from the bus drop-off.  Then when it's time to leave, there is always a long line to get back on the bus.

The area where the different clans setup their booths is fairly flat.  But the areas where the music/bands perform is a bit rough.

I do think that it could be a bit of a challenge for someone using a walker.  A wheelchair would probably be better.  Hope that helps!
