Urban Planning in the Windy City

Chicago is a fully developed city that was designed with great foresight to preserve its beautiful lakefront setting. Daniel Burnham is among the masterminds who laid the foundation for this incredible city with plenty of green parkland and public waterfront. So you might wonder where there’s room to make improvements…

Private developers continue to reshape the urban landscape with new skyscrapers, Chicago condo conversions and other millennial projects. Some recent architectural gems have significantly changed the Chicago skyline, such as the Trump Tower, whose sleek edifice hovers over the Chicago River and reaches toward the clouds with its distinctive antennae. How can we expect to see these familiar surroundings change in the future?

The Navy Pier Flyover is a proposed overpass that would make it easier for cyclists, pedestrians and inline skaters to cross the Chicago River while on the Lakefront Trail. This mega $40+ million, 6-year undertaking would provide a safe and enjoyable route between the north and south sides of the river.

Cubs fans probably already know Wrigley Field is getting a makeover that coincides with the stadium’s centennial birthday in 2014. This massive renovation will widen concourses, create an open-air courtyard and add a restaurant below the third base terrace.

Northerly Island is an extension of Chicago’s Museum Campus, positioned off the mainland and separated by a narrow inlet of water. The city has big plans for this 91-acre plot of land, which is where the Adler Planetarium is located. Park District officials have brought the architect behind Chicago’s award-winning Aqua tower on board to redesign Northerly Island over the next 20-30 years. The new blueprints call for construction of a harbor, reef and lagoon with a sunken ship where people can swim and kayak. They also want to create wetlands for migratory birds to get some respite during their long flights.
