21 Comments on Top 10 states with the highest property taxes
Jim,
Very surprised who made the top 10. I also thought we had high property taxes in Texas as we do not have a state income tax.
Jim * great list....this chart shows why many landlords are ABANDONING these states in droves so that their investment capital is not erroded.
Jim, I am not surprised about New Jersey, New York or Massachusetts because of the dense populations. But Nebraska? Why?
Jim, there are a lot of people in Florida who would say we should be on that list. I still think Florida is a bargain in real estate taxes compared to New York and Connecticut.
Jim - Uh oh, New England didn't fair very well on this list. <sigh>
Jim,
Interesting information to be sure. However my mental computer is programed for comparing property taxes as a percentage of the sales price.
Best,
Steve
Hi Jim! I'm pretty sure Alabama has the lowest property taxes. If you know anybody that wants to relocate I personally know an awesome real estate professional! :o)
Hi Jim, Glad to see Colorado didn't make the top ten list. I had heard that Nebraska had high property taxes. We have been there quite a bit (especially my husband). They have great homes on the golf course for like $200k, but the property taxes kill you.
I'm surprised Washington (no state income tax) and Oregon (no state sales tax) are not on the list. Having to rely on only two legs of the tax stool means the taxes charged have to be higher to make up the missing leg.

So, Ohio didn't make the list, which is a good thing, but our property taxes are just a smidgen below #10 on this list. Not a good sign.

one would think CA would rank high, but it doesnt, I think prop 13 makes a difference.
So Jim, when they said "go west young man" they were talking about taxes ... if not, they should have been! Looks like the original 13 have a high ranking in the tax brackets!
Jim, very interesting. I guess it goes to show that just because someone says or feels like they have high property taxes (such as Texas) , that does not mean that there is data to support the statement.
I am also surprised that California was not in the top 10....hmmmm, very interesting
Jim, I have had many families relocating into Denver stating our taxes are much more affordable than their previous state, glad Colorado is NOT on this list!
Hey, everyone!

Steve – You only buy the home once, though, so to me it makes more sense to look at them on a yearly basis as part of your income. If you bought the home for $500,000 and paid, say, $10,000 in property taxes that first year, and then four years later the home had decreased in value to $250,000, does it still make sense to look at the sales price?. And, of course, California probably is not on the list because of Proposition 13?
Yikes, I didn't know that Property Taxes anywhere could be that high!
Jim, no wonder so many folks from up there are moving to Florida! Especially people from NJ and NY. We have tons of them here in Jax!

Jim -- this is very intersting... I didn't know NH was # 2... However, we have no income tax and our overall cost of living is lower than our neighboring MA> I think the passage of prop 13 in Calfornia is the reason taht property taxes are lower in CA... however, there are lots of other taxes, including an income tax.
