"David Thompson first referred to it in one of his journals as "a point of sand" that pushed into Lake Pend Oreille. Members of the Kalispell tribe called it Qapquape, which translates to "sandy place."
Today, Sandpoint is nothing similar to the remote spot familiar to Thompson and numerous Native Americans before him. Even a century ago, when it was formally incorporated as a city, Sandpoint was nothing like the upscale year-round tourist site that it has become." - October 31, 2002, Spokesman Review.
That was how the story began in an article that was printed about the documentary that tells the story of Sandpoint. It is titled Sandpoint at the North End of the Long Bridge. It is a wonderful film commissioned for the Centennial Celebration of our fine city made by award-winning documentarian Erik Daarstad.
The film is great for those of us who live here. Certainly the attachment we have to our area is the string that binds us to this film. However, we have the good luck of having filmmaker Daarstad live here. His wonderful storytelling makes this a film great to view no matter your locale or where you are from.
Though the original screening of this film was in 2001, corresponding with the 100th anniversary of the founding of Sandpoint, Idaho. The film was previewed again at the end of last summer.
It tells our story, which, when I viewed it again recently, still fits in most ways.
