Pottstown's Historic Advertising Murals (Final in a Series of 5)

The Luden's mural is located on the rear wall of 236 High Street. Luden's Candies originated in Reading PA in 1879 and was owned by William H. Luden.  One of the first products was "moshe" a Pennsylvania Dutch treat made from brown sugar and molasses. Luden expanded his operation from his mother's kitchen to a larger facility at 6th and Washington Streets in Reading in 1892.  The extensive candy line grew to include cough drops, hard candy, as well as chocolate and marshmallow products. After changing hands many times, the throat drops are now owned by Pfizer, Inc.

If you'd like to see these for yourself, brochures are available for all walking tours in the lobby of 152 High Street, the home of the Tri County Chamber of Commerce: 610 326-2900.

Thanks goes to the Leadership Tri-County members of the Class of 2004 for putting together this information

Danielle...thanks for the comment.  The concept really is awesome.  I truly love the idea that Pottstown embraces it's rich business history.  If you're ever in the neighborhood, be sure and stop by and check them out!

Faith - I love those, too. I can instantly taste a Luden's cough drop after reading that mural.

Faith - I just found your series on these historic ads and I really liked seeing them.  Of all 5, this was my favorite - my kids love Luden's when they don't feel well - although not the menthol, they like the cherry ones.

Steve...so glad you enjoyed the murals. I really think it was an awesome way to wake up Pottstown's rich business history.  It seems that this is the very favorite one among the masses!  Thanks for the comment! If you're ever in the neighborhood (yeah, Denver via Pottstown PA!), be sure and swing by and see them for yourself!

Cute Desiree!  Unfortunately, the only thing I could overnite from the business that is housed in this building today would be an antique desk chair(it's an antique shop, I believe)--that wouldn't help, would it?  ;) Thanks for your comment!
