I received a question about linking from one page to another within a realtor's website yesterday, and I thought it would be valuable to give everyone the answer here.
In general, Google says that a web page should limit the number of links on it to around 100. So definitely, don't put more than 100 links any one page of your website. That's all links included, i.e. navigation, sidebar, footer links, etc. in addition to your links within the content of the page.
Additionally, I would make the statement that you shouldn't really link to a page on your website without having a good reason for doing so.
You will not be able to rank every page on your website for every keyword, so you need to focus.
Some good reasons for placing a link on your page to another page on your site:
1. You are trying to rank one of your landing/conversion pages for the anchor text keyword chosen.
2. The link provides something very interesting and/or necessary to the user. Things like additional product information or terms of services links fit in here.
3. If you are trying to get the other page indexed in Google (the number of pages on your site that are indexed in Google is VERY important to the SEO health of your website).
There may be other good reasons to place links on your site, just make sure that you have definite, and worthwhile purpose for doing so.

10 Comments on How Many Links on My Page are Too Many?
Jeffrey, this is good information to keep in mind when placing links on my webpage. Best to be conservative.
Jeff, thanks so much! You just answered a question that I was too afraid to ask. It's time for me to get linking.
Well considering time constraints, I wouldn't have any pages that even come close to 100 links, even with sidebar, footer and navigation. I'm going to download your course, thank you.
Intersting, I didn't realize internal links counted. 100 sounds like a large number but if it includes internal links you can get there faster than you think. Enlightening. Thanks.
Don't agree with the "don't link to one of your websites pages" thinking. Appreciate the use care, have purpose though if you do. That is contrary to my SEO experience what I apply, see others doing that works if done with thought, sparingly and with plenty of purpose. Thanks for the post..this area is one fascinating "art" for those wearing the "R" to develop, improve on and prosper from.
Everyone:
Thanks for the great feedback, and I wish you all the best of luck in your business! I will have more tips and advice to come.
Andrew:
I never said not to link to one of your pages. I am saying that you need to take a look at each page of your site, and be conservative on how you link. If you are approaching the 100 links limit, then consider creating another page on your site, and move some of the links there, then add a link from the first page to the second page. That way you get to have all of the links you want, and you can end up with an additional page indexed in Google!
Great information. Thanks for posting this. Maybe I need more links.
Good morning Jeffry.
Less is more...Put what you thing is important...
Have a nice day.
I wasn't aware of the recommendations by Google. Thanks for sharing...
Jeffry, 100 links ~ Wow that sure seems like too many! We know we probably can use more on ours, but so far we're satisfied with our results!
