If you own a car, you need gas to run it. In purchasing a vehicle in today's economic climate, the price of gas has to weigh heavily on ones thought process. I mean your whole investment for a car makes no sense unless gas is affordable. Which begs the question and an answer of the title of this post

HAVE CAR...WILL NOT TRAVEL

For those of us who own cars, I use mine sparingly. I also car pool with others to go to Costco or run errands. In addition, I organize my business so that I get a lot done on that day and in certain areas. The price of gas has changed the way I think

BLOOD FROM A TURNIP SYNDROME

I feel like we are all being tested to see how much we can afford. People have only so much money for necessities, responsibilities and pleasure. The price of gas is fast becoming a luxury item and we all know we can do without luxuries when things get tight.

OWNING IS EXPENSIVE

When you add insurance, gas, registration and maintenance costs up, the price to own a car is questionable. People in Europe know this and use taxis, bicycles, and motorcycles to get around. Owning a car is risky and expensive over there. Is that where we are heading?

THANK YOU GODZILLA

I wonder we would be if it wasn't for the dinosaurs. You see they roamed the earth for about 120 million years and then upon their death was absorbed by the earth. Add a few hundred million years and we get oil called fossil  fuels all over this planet just waiting to be used. But, we are running low and I don't see any more dinosaurs making more

THE STUFF IS HARD TO GET TO

Supply and demand is at work. We are certain that vast amounts of oil exist under the glaciers found in Alaska. Drilling for it is impossible because of all the earthly movements daily making it impossible to sink a shaft. Other countries only have so much to sell too. When you stop and think on how all of our industry is oil based, it then becomes alarming.

WE HAVE SOME SAVED UP...BUT?

I know America keeps an oil reserve, but it is not for the public as much as it is for the government and all its needs to be kept running. They will not release those figures, but at the rate we consume the stuff, even that wont last long. All governments suffer from this.

PARTIAL ANSWERS

Alternative sources like solar and wind while attractive will only serve the areas in which they are built or that are the closest to them. Everyone else may or may not have access....At what point do you stop paying exorbitant prices for this stuff?

Presented for your consideration and thank you

If people don't buy at $5/gallon, they be walking or driving the Volt or some electric car!!

If I could get my hands on an electric car that was decent and affordable, I would BUY it! The idea of the electric car has those OIL MEN in a tizzy, as they stand to lose alot..We as Earth keepers stand to gain alot more by helping the environment.

Makes it hard to sell real estate if no one is willing to get in a car to go see the homes for sale. In bulk of America, having a car is a requirement. Public transportation isn't very viable for most homeowners. I don't know how much lumber and other supplies from Lowes you can put on a city bus or a taxi cab.

I think of my client who only owns diesel Jettas, and wish I had one, too. A new vanity cabinet from Lowes won't fit well in a Jetta.

Bryan...that supposes that we have the money to keep going. Everything in the global economy is connected to everything else. When will the water (economy) seek its own level? The consumer can only do so much with what they have..thank you Bryan

Yvonne...don't forget that oil is still part of the electric car systems....Tires are made from oil. so is the paint and the interiors. It has far more reaching affects this oil shortage than meets the eye....

Hi Melanie....you raise some good points and I am guessing that Obama has more problems that weigh on him than we could possibly know. He has to deal with our now and our future....

Richie - I've certainly changed my driving habits; and though I have a vehicle that gets good mileage, I plan my driving in advance.  The sad part is that we could have solved the energy problem long ago.

When I was a kid, my aunt had a childless friend who occasionally invited me to the movies.  Her car, which I'll never forget, was very old and electric powered.  If we had only encouraged the development of such cars, we'd not be experiencing many of the problems we have today.  But oil was already a readily available commodity--why bother with new energy sources when we already had an "unlimited supply?"  Now we know the answer to that question.

Of course we'll be buying it at $5.00 a gallon.  If our cigarette smokers are willing to submit to packs at $8.00 plus then gas at $5 is a no-brainer.  We're Americans dammit and we're addicted to our cars!

Hello John....amazing the choices that come up in life and how making money affects them...Disney's monorail system should be all over the United States but then all those cars would go unsold from people who used elevated system. The simple truth is that those rails can go anywhere. Imagine them above every freeway across the nation. Tunneling to establish subways is expensive yet that is pursued over the Monorail....Capitalism John, wins out in the end over common sense and working smarter...all for $$$..

Kevin...Drug dealer and drug user is our relationship? Apparently so....We are being held captive to the car and what it takes to keep it running. Any extra money to go to the movies, eat out or donate to charity now will go to oil companies....?

Not so much "addicted" to the car, but our suburbs are not designed to walk.  There are no local grocery stores with 3 miles of my home, and this is typical.  Everything that we do is car-centered only because there's nothing to walk to.  Gas prices go up when there are conflicts ... Americans pay for it.

Hi Richie -- can't imagine life without a car and using oil. But, we all can change our habits. Reducing our use is possible (even fun!) I just bought a Prius--best mileage: a 59-mile trip averaging 49.1 mpg. When my husband and I move to SF, we plan to have only one car. I'll continue to use it in my real estate business, and for out of town trips, but walking and using public transit in the city is our intent. Much harder to do in the suburbs.

Carla...queen of all Buyer agents in Oregon sales...says you have to go along with it like it or not. I predict a bicycle in her near future if the price of gas keeps going up....Carla, how much can we stand of this? I will follow the Amish if I have too....horse and carriage here I come!

Lottie...I like your thinking and will probably follow your example...well done and I want the best for you when you make your move....
