Smith Mountain Lake Host to Fitness Competitions

The same retreat-like qualities that make Smith Mountain Lake a resident’s dream and a vacationer’s favorite also make it an idyllic fitness competition destination. Twice a year triathletes from all over Virginia and east coast come to Smith Mountain Lake to compete in either the spring sprint distance triathlon organized by Virginia Amateur Sports or the Olympic distance Big Lick triathlon in the fall sponsored by the YMCA of Roanoke Valley.

Triathlon competitors are able to take advantage of Smith Mountain Lake’s body of water for the swim portion of the race and its wide, private roadways for biking and then running. Unlike many larger towns, competitors are able to meet at the Smith Mountain Lake state park where there is plenty of room for parking and preparing for the race without clogged traffic or difficult navigation. Spectators have their pick of grassy areas to set up folding chairs, a blanket and many even bring their dogs.

Furthermore, Smith Mountain Lake is a perfect location for athletes in Virginia and surrounding states to meet. The fall Big Lick event attracts close to 500 athletes from about 20 different states each year. Competitors who have experienced a race event at SML know its scenic landscape, mild climate and welcoming community can’t be beat.
