I Don't Think George Washington Slept Here

Pohick Church and historic marker

This historic church is as lovely today as it was in the eighteenth century. It is in Lorton just south of Fort Belvoir on US Route 1 which is pretty much the same route the Washingtons wuld have travelled from Mount Vernon for worship services

The church is still home to an active Episcopal congregation as it was when Washington, Mason and Fairfax attended. The church and grounds are impeccably maintained. As was typical of the day there is an attached cemetery with many very old grave markers.

Hi Karen, That was wonderful and I loved the title. And I am sure you are right, that he doze off there. Love the photo and historical significance. Nicely Done!

I love the title, Karen.  I was looking at the maintenance of that building and find it hard to believe it's that old - it's obviously received a lot of care over the years.  I would love the see the inside.

Karen, I doubt if George Washington dozed off, but he may have doodled on some paper about future expansion for the church building during some sermons.

I love Virginia history.  What a great church.  My wager is that he might have even spoke to the congregation.
