I Do NOT Do That! Or Do I?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Killian Properties (Oklahoma & Texas)

Want to see yourself from a buyer or sellers perspective?  Be a buyer or seller and hire a Realtor.

Don't need to buy or sell a home for yourself?  Tag along with someone who does need to do this (preferably in another market area) and be prepared to see lots of things you do that are right and even more that you do that are wrong.

My daughter is looking for a home in another state and I've gone to all 35 showings and it's been a fantastice education.  Her Realtor is a lot like me in that she's quiet and not pushy which I've always viewed as great strenghts in myself but.......

.....I now know I should make a few changes. Don't get me wrong.  I'm not going to turn into the type of agent I absolutely despise.  That agent that pushes and manipulates with their commission check being the top priority.  If you see yourself in that description.....shame on you!!

I can honestly say I didn't see the need for any major changes but my methods need to be tweaked just a tad.

It's strange to be on the other side of the deal but also enlightening and I'd suggest every real estate professional try it at least once.

The experience has made me a much better representative to all my buyers and sellers.

Janie -  what a great opportunity for you.  I'm curious now . . .  what tweaking are you considering?

That's a great question Susan!

Mainly I wanted the other real estate professional to give us more direction since we didn't know the area or the market at all.  Which neighborhoods are better for resell, etc.

I realized I have to provide my clients with more than what I've been providing them.  I never want to be a pushy agent or talk anyone into buying something but I can do a better job of educating my buyers on the local market and areas.

My main focus has always been about my buyers best interest but now I know I can do better.

Janie -  that's a great answer :0)   I think we get used to local Buyers and forget sometimes to show the whole community to allow our out of town Buyers a better feel for what they're getting themselves into.  I've had many agents teach me what not to do, that's for sure!
