16 Comments on Be safe today - Sit open houses in pairs, not alone
I just wrote a blog about why (business-wise) I don't normally do Open Houses....this is another reason. In our industry, we are like sitting ducks if we sit alone. Good suggestion and good post. Thanks.
Diana - It didn't often come up here when I was selling. We learned quickly that people in our community don't attend opoen houses. But I know in some communities it is a way to sell homes, or at least to gather buyer prospects.
I really don't do open houses, but if I did, I would have my gun AND my husband. When I used to do open houses, I would have friends and family stop by just in case.
I learned my lesson.....hubby goes (he carries). Ugh what a horrible horrible thing.
Kathy and Nancy... You're both smart to keep both the gun and the husband close by!
As you can tell, I'm not an advocate of gun control. I think if the crazies and crooks knew their victims were armed they'd be a lot less likely to attack. And... when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.
Meanwhile, my heart goes out to that young woman's family and friends.
A fair portion of the agents in our area have a license to carry.
Rob - A good idea, I think.
I still actively do open houses, some vacant, some are not. I have sold many homes from having an open house, even writing an offer on the kitchen table during that same open house, which is why I continue to do them.
Even being skilled in self defense, there are times I have felt uneasy - it really is NOT a safe thing to do right now, being alone at an open house or meeting a stranger at a vacant home. Our society is changing with desparate people about, thinking we are an easy target.
I do have a concealed carry license, have an excellent gun that I am very "familiar" with - but I rarely carry it with me in regards to real estate. It's like I have enough to carry to an open house - and that would be another item to tote around, and make sure to keep it in safe keeping. Maybe I need to change my thoughts.
Maybe so - You never know where a crazy person might turn up. Maybe you need a nice holster that could stay hidden under a jacket or a pant-leg. Or - make sure you're never there alone!
Marte, great reminder! This is one reason I don't sit at open houses alone. The main reason is to avoid boredom. Thanks!
Whitney - Oh yes, the boredom! The few times I tried doing an open house I was very thankful for every neighbor or friend who dropped by.
Marte I found out about this through J Phillip's post on yesterday. What a shame that a job such as that of a real estate agent, is a dangerous one. I feel for this girl and her family. What a loss.
Charita - I agree. But any time we put ourselves in a situation where we're all alone with a total stranger, there's a potential of danger. Yours is one of many such careers - think of cab drivers!
Never have my back turned on people I don't know, especially at open houses!! I also take pictures of the license plates of the cars as they pull in the driveway and text them to my wife if something should go wrong.

Oh, by the way, thanks for the letters, had to do a couple changes to them based on our state laws, but other than that loved them.
