San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station

I've driven from San Diego to Los Angeles many times and never paid much attention to nuclear power plants. March 11, 2011, changed that. Of course, that was the date when the 9.0 earthquake and resulting tsunami devastated northern Japan, including the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant.

At about the halfway point between San Diego and Los Angeles is the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station:

San Onofre is at the northwest corner of San Diego County and is surrounded by Camp Pendleton and San Onofre State Park. Interstate 5 passes right by, carrying tens of thousands of cars each day, and perhaps a few hundred thousand cars on weekend days when Los Angelenos come to San Diego and Tijuana to get away from the L.A. smog.

San Onofre is operated by Southern California Edison, has about 2,000 employees, and provides electricity to the Los Angeles metropolitan area, as well as Riverside County and San Diego County. Reactor Unit 1 was built in 1968, with Unit 2 coming online in August 1983 and Unit 3 coming online in April 1984. Unit 1 one was decommissioned in 1992.

The remaining two units are licensed through 2022, but the problems in Japan have caused both the State of California and the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission to take a look at safety measures at San Onofre, which was built to withstand a 7.0 earthquake directly under the reactors.

If you're familiar with the 1960s television show Batman, the San Onofre Unit 1 reactor was used as the Gotham City Atomic Reactor.
