What are clouds and why are they interesting? Some of the cloud formations here in Southern California are interesting to  understand specially where they occur. I went on to Wikipedia and searched cloud formations and was somewhat overwhelmed with all that is there.

Cloud Formations

These types of clouds have names  beyond cumulus and cirrus being about the only two I could name. It seems besides the unusual patterns we observe when staring at them, there is a lot of science taking place.

Cloud Formations

I enjoy capturing cloud formation photos for the intensity and patterns often created. But because they are actually weather and continually being affected by many factors such wind, circulation, heat, cooling of moist air,the sun, they seem to morph into images that are ever changing. And sometimes they have colors ( reflected sunlight ) that would almost shock you with the intensity.

Cloud Formations

Cloud formations, the process where various types are formed, generally involves adiabatic cooling. As I began to better understand clouds and what makes them so fascinating, it was difficult not to pick a little science along the way.

Cloud Formations

With a greater appreciation of why cloud formations are there, it makes capturing them all the more interesting. I will keep a sharp eye and remember to look up now and then and take it all in. Sharing a few photos here and there seems like a natural way of actually understanding more about them as I research them and learn a little bit more each time.

Hi Lynn, With weather everywhere, there will be clouds and at any given moment, they can be transformed into an artist's canvass.

Hi Margaret, Thank you. No, I actually didn't try to locate it as I was all over the place for the Rowing Regatta and then downtown to the Suspension Bridge and BallPark. Needle in the haystack type of thing.  I went ahead and purchased the larger ball head since I needed it anyway for the heavier camera. The company was very helpful and thanked me for my blog posts. Seems a number of people from ActiveRain ordered the monopod. They had a number of orders for the Teck Pod II and deduced that someone had blogged about it again, :-)

Hi Lynda, As always, thank you for your encouragement and support. It is so cool to have wonderful friends like you that stop by to acknowledge the photos. I hope you won't miss the Butterfly Collection. They are some of my very best!

Hi RuthMarie, The photo is simply gorgeous. The colors are amazing and the composition is exceptional. This one should be transferred to canvas and be on someone's wall. Thank you so much. Next time make the photo larger. Don't worry about being too big. Photos should be large enough to really enjoy them and in my mind you can make get too large. :-)

H Mike, One of the real advantages of having lots of sky and cloud photos is that someone can fix a photo with a bad sky. Simply replace. I love the description you used to describe the clouds. Thank you for enhancing the post with your comment.

Here you go.... I'll make it full sized....

Glad you liked it - It is one of my favorites....It's from the Rockefeller Preserve in Tarrytown/Pocantico Hills area.  It was after a storm when the light was coming through the clouds. The colors of fall had peaked and the dried leaves were that unusual burnt orange.  So it was a real contrast against the gray of the sky.

I don't know how I missed this blog when you first posted it William.  But I did!  The second photo is my favorite.  There is something special about cloud formations, which look like powerful gods punched a hole, and allowed the color blue to prevail:-)

I had to come back, it wasn't the second photo I was talking about.  It was the third!  That one really struck a chord with me.

Hi Tom, Thank you so much. I have a huge collection, and just added a few here. Now, I if I just knew how to add them into to some photos that need the cloud patterns, :-)

Hi RuthMarie, I usually always get notice of posts and for some reason I received one notice this morning and then fouls other comments including yours I didn't know was there.

This photo is totally awesome. Suitable for canvas. I am really impressed and thank you for the larger version ( which you should always use because your photos are amazing). People would love these and hopefully you are using in posts at least now and then.

Hi Myrl, One of favorites too as it is the pre-Sunset photo that came out so vibrant.

Hi Bob, What a beautiful photo. The colors are so true and the topography details are so striking. This would make a stunning canvas and certainly inspiration for any artist to create a painting of it.

Thank you so much for the special recognition Bob!

Thank you William and I have many photos like this! This photo at my comment above has been reduced to only 20% pixels so thieves at the Internet can't steal and reproduce it. This photo will full pixels is very clear and Breath-Taking, and I think it would make a great photo for a painting.

Hi Bob, I am learning that lesson as a number of things I post end up elsewhere. Lower resolution uploads make for postings. Since I have entered the photography world, the perspective for capturing alluring scenes and those things we have always observed and didn't see, make photography such an amazing hobby. I would certainly agree that your photo that you represented here is a stunning capture whether printed or painted. Just beautiful.

William, I just joined Vegas Bob's cloud group - of course you have a post here!

I take shots of clouds all the time - I see ghosts of people I know up there - :)  I stood out in the drizzle the other night, beautiful clouds at sunset - I just cannot get a grasp of my new camera.  It is a point and shoot Lumix, pretty expensive for a P & S - my old Canon was a breeze, but I scratched the lens and my husband dropped it, never the same.  :(

Thank you Christine for you comment and also causing me to review the post for a number of  grammatical errors as well. I just edited the post with the minor corrections and thank you for causing me to reread the post and finding them.
